Coopersburg motorist fatally injured in I-78 accident

A 22-year-old motorist, of Coopersburg, suffered fatal injuries in a collision with a tractor trailer truck along Interstate 78 eastbound in Lower Macungie Township April 23, according to authorities.

Ryan W. Gretz was pronounced dead 12:28 a.m. at the accident scene, according to a press release from the Lehigh County Coroner dated April 24.

First responders were called to Interstate 78 near mile marker 54.3 at approximately 11:27 p.m., according to a press release from Pennsylvania State Police Fogelsville.

The cause of death was determined to be blunt force injuries and the manner of death was found to be an accident, according to the coroner’s office.

A passenger of the vehicle, described by state police as a 21-year-old female, of Massachusetts, was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The details of the crash were given as follows:

A 2010 Ford Mustang driven by the Coopersburg motorist collided with a 2007 Peterbilt tractor trailer, according to authorities.

Gretz was driving the vehicle.

Traffic was detoured onto State Route 100.

I-78 reopened to eastbound traffic 5:45 a.m.

The truck driver was not injured, according to authorities.

Among responders were Cetronia Ambulance crews, the Upper and Lower Macungie fire departments, Goodwill Fire Company and Lehigh Valley Paramedics.

Additional investigating agencies include Pennsylvania State Police Troop M Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist, the Troop M Forensic Services Unit, Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, South Whitehall police and Upper Macungie Township police.
