SHS softball wins three of first five games

The Salisbury softball team is putting up some nice numbers both offensively and from the pitching circle in the early part of the season. Tessa Kemmerer has pitched every inning for the Falcons this season and has a 2.49 ERA. The Falcons team batting average is .378 through their first five games and they are 3-2 during that stretch.

They have won games in blowout fashion – 17-0 against Dieruff and 15-0 against Jim Thorpe – and they have won at least one tight game against Palisades, which ended 5-4.

One of the keys at the plate has been patience, which might be surprising when one considers that half of the roster is made up of sophomores and freshmen.

In the win against Jim Thorpe, Salisbury walked 13 times to go with its seven hits from six different players in the game. The only player with multiple hits was freshman Julia Carney, who went 2-2 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI.

Sophia Gunning scored twice with a triple and three walks in the game. In addition to Carney’s two runs driven in, Leilanna Negron, Sydney Foulke, Brinlee Neitz, and Alaina Pavolko all had two RBI in the win. Leadoff hitter Gianna Olds, Kemmerer, Carney, and Foulke all scored two runs in the game.

The 5-4 win at Palisades saw Gunning go 3-for-3 with a home run to right field in the fourth inning. One batter later, Kemmerer homered as the Falcons took a 5-2 lead through four innings.

Palisades made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh when it rallied for two runs and had the bases loaded when Kemmerer got the final out of the game on a fly ball to right.

Salisbury has dropped its last two games with a 4-0 loss to Lehighton and a 5-4 loss to Northern Lehigh. Olds collected a double and two singles against Lehighton and Neitz had two hits against Northern Lehigh.

The offense has big numbers up and down the lineup. Gunning leads the team with an .875 average.

Neitz is hitting .538. Carney is at .500. Kemmerer is batting .417. Negron is at .385. Jenna Swoyer is batting .357, and Olds has a .333 average.
