PHS boys volleyball takes fifth at tournament

The Parkland High School boys volleyball team it dropped both of its matches last week before earning a fifth-place finish at the annual Bobcat Invitational at Northeastern High School Saturday.

Parkland lost to Southern Lehigh 3-1 by scores of 23-25, 17-25, 25-17, 20-25, last Tuesday, March 24. The Trojans then fell to Freedom in four sets by scores of 19-25, 27-25, 18-25, 21-25, on Thursday. On Saturday, Parkland went 6-1 at the Bobcat Invitational.

In the match with the Spartans, Zeke Gordner led the offense with 15 kills and added one block and three digs, while Vishank Somala contributed five kills, three blocks and six digs.

In the match with the Patriots, Gordner paced the attack with 11 kills and added three digs, while Jude Ruisch tallied 10 kills, 10 digs and one ace. Defensively, Owen Barnett collected 15 digs and Gabe Chase also recorded 10 digs while dishing out 34 assists.

On Saturday at the invitational, Parkland won its first four matches, defeating McDowell, Northern York, Mechanicsburg and Northeastern. In the play-in round, the Trojans beat Nazareth 2-1, which put the Trojans in the championship bracket.

There, they took down Redland 2-1 before falling to District 1 powerhouse Pennridge 2-1. That placed the Trojans fifth overall.

Parkland began this week at 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
