Volleyball tops DHS
Whitehall’s volleyball team won their last two matches, 3-0, with a victory over Dieruff (25-17, 25-15, 25-9) and a win over Easton (25-7, 25-16, 25-22).
“We were putting the ball down, which is what it comes down to,” said Whitehall outside hitter Elias Kamhia (5 kills). “If you can get a quick glance before you go up in the air and see where the defense is playing, you want to try to put the ball in a good spot, and that’s how you get kills most efficiently.”
After a 4-4 tie in the second set with Easton, the Zephyrs took the lead for the rest of the set.
“I thought, in (Set) 1 and 2, defensively, we were really good, we were picking everything up, we wouldn’t let the ball drop,” said Whitehall coach George Cowitch. “That’s what we do and who we are.”
Easton took a 4-1 lead in the third set, but Whitehall middle blocker Cole Rozycki (10 kills, 2 blocks) scored consistently to keep the Zephyrs ahead.
Late in the third set, two out-of-bounds balls by Whitehall brought Easton within two points until middle blocker Omari Ratliff (8 kills) put the match away with a final kill.
“Usually, when we win the first two sets, we kind of slack off in the last one, but we’re gonna work on that tomorrow in practice, but I think it’s just a lack of focus that’s bringing [the other team] closer.,” Ratliff said. “Knowing that I can get a point for my team and get us closer to a win feels great. I love winning with my team, and this experience, in general, is so fun.”
Jayden Haik had 9 kills, 8 digs, 2 aces; Kole Moyer had 32 assists, 8 digs, 4 aces; and Drew Sodl added 13 digs, 6 aces, all for the Zephyrs.
“I would like them to be a little cleaner,” Cowitch said. “Set 1, Set 2, we were really good. Set 3, you get a little lapse there. You’re beating a team up pretty good, and then, I feel like guys take a little break or they don’t put that pressure on that we’re asking them to do...We played two-thirds of a match, in my opinion, so it’s got to be better, and they know that.”
In the Zephyrs’ match against Dieruff, Kamhia had 11 Kills, 7 digs; Ratliff had 10 kills, 2 blocks; Haik tallied 9 kills, 11 digs, 2 aces; Derrick James added 8 kills, 10 digs, 5 aces; Rozycki had 8 kills, 1 block; Moyer had 45 assists, 5 digs; Sodl added 22 digs, 2 aces.
Whitehall will host William Allen on April 21 and Nazareth on April 27.
