Township library breaks ground for improvements

Whitehall Township Public Library, 3700 Mechanicsville Road, hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking March 31 to officially kick off a series of transformative building improvements.

The event was attended by township leaders and community supporters, marking the start of a yearlong initiative to modernize the facility. Whitehall Mayor Joseph J. Marx Jr., board of commissioners President Jeffrey J. Warren and Commissioners Taylor Stakes and Ken Snyder joined the library board of trustees, led by board President Denise Shaffer, to celebrate the library’s investment in the community’s future.

“Whitehall Township Public Library is proud to announce an exciting new chapter,” Shaffer said. “Within 2026, the library building will undergo multiple projects to enhance accessibility and functionality, ensuring we remain a premier destination for learning and connection within our community.”

While the ceremony served as the public celebration, phase 1 of the construction began in February. These initial projects are designed to improve the patron experience through modern infrastructure and inclusive design.

Key project features include the installation of automated openers on entrance doors to provide easier access for all visitors; restroom modernization with comprehensive updates to existing facilities, including the addition of a new Americans With Disability Act-compliant bathroom; a full replacement of the main circulation desk to create a more efficient and welcoming service hub; and the replacement of exterior windows for improved energy efficiency and a complete remodel of the library’s pergola.

These vital improvements will ensure the library continues to serve as a sanctuary for curious minds and a vital gathering place for shared community resources. The project is a centerpiece of the library’s mission to provide every child and resident in Whitehall with modern, high-quality opportunities to discover, learn and grow.

The library plans to remain open during the majority of the construction process. Updates will be shared through the library’s website and social media.
