LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Pates top Zephyrs

Whitehall’s boys volleyball team hosted Freedom in a highly anticipated and competitive match on April 1 when the Patriots remained undefeated with a 3-1 victory (25-22, 12-25, 25-23, 26-24) over the Zephyrs.

With the first set under its belt, Freedom started the second set with several miscommunications that cost the Patriots’ points.

Whitehall took advantage of its own 6-0 lead and continued to widen the gap.

Middle blocker Omari Ratliff’s tip over the net prompted a Freedom timeout, but the Zephyrs continued to build their lead with Jayden Haik’s kill down the line and a kill by Cole Rozycki.

Ratliff scored the last two points for the Zephyrs’ second-set win.

Ratliff had back-to-back points in the third set to bring the Zephyrs within one point twice and landed the ball at the sideline to tie the set, 20-20.

Haik served an ace to tie the set again, 23-23, but a serve that went out of bounds and Ayden Willman’s point for Freedom ended the third.

Whitehall won a fourth-set rally, and Ratliff’s block put the Zephyrs ahead, 14-10.

A huge point by Haik made the score, 18-13, and teammate Elias Kamhia had a big point to maintain the lead, 21-17.

Freedom was able to make up four points after Patriot coach John Yanek called a timeout.

Whitehall coach George Cowitch called consecutive timeouts with the score, 22-21, and 22-22.

The Zephyrs gained a point when Freedom’s Dylan Shupp slipped on the court, but the Patriot senior made up for the trip-up with a kill to tie, 23-23.

After a 24-24 tie, Freedom’s Carter Richardson’s block ended the match.

Whitehall is scheduled to host Dieruff on April 10 and Easton on April 13.
