Boys get a win over Quakertown
Northampton backed up a quick start on offense with suffocating defense to beat the Quakertown Panthers, 16-1, in a nonconference boys’ lacrosse game on Wednesday (April 1) at home on Joan Kremus Field.
The K-Kids (3-5) scored just 29 seconds into the opening quarter on a goal from Bryce Tompkins, giving Northampton a lead they would not relinquish.
Two more goals from Tompkins in the first quarter, along with goals from Ryken Moyer, Ashtyn Dremock and Parker Nagy, pushed the K-Kids to a 6-0 lead after the opening twelve minutes.
“We knew they were going to play zone, so we drew up a few zone plays and once we got to our spots and got into our rhythm, we were good,” Dremock said.
Overall, the K-Kids played good team offense, said Tim Smith, Northampton head coach.
“We were able to just take our time, get our looks, and be patient,” Smith said. “We have a very young team, so it was good that we were able to be patient and run the offense how we wanted to run it.”
While the Northampton offense started strong, the K-Kids’ defense did not give an inch to Quakertown.
When the Panthers did get a shot off on goal, Cooper Fry provided a last line of defense, stopping every shot in goal he faced through the first three quarters.
“We were playing an aggressive man defense,” Smith said. “The whole intent there is to get outside, savable shots and Cooper did a fantastic job of saving the savable shots.”
Dremock also said the team played very well on defense and in goal, keeping Quakertown on the perimeter.
Two more goals from Dremock and a second goal from Nagy pushed the Northampton lead to 9-0 at halftime.
Coming out after halftime, the K-Kids added three more goals in the third quarter. Tompkins scored two of those, giving him five goals for the game. The other goal in the third quarter came off the stick of Brady Woolslayer.
Up 12-0 heading into the final quarter, Northampton continued to build the lead. Moyer, Dremock and Woolslayer each added to their tallies for the game with additional goals. Meanwhile, Gavin Sinsky scored in the fourth quarter as well.
Quakertown did not get on the board until the final minute of the game when they scored their lone goal.
For the game, Tompkins’ five goals paced the K-Kids. Dremock added four goals, while Woolslayer, Nagy, and Moyer each scored twice, with Sinsky scoring once.
“It wasn’t perfect,” Dremock said. “We didn’t do everything right and there are still some things to work on, but it’s always nice to get a win. It was nice to see a couple of freshmen get their first goals and some get their first points. That’s the best part.”
The win provided momentum heading back into the back part of the schedule, Smith said.
“We have a couple of days off with the Easter break,” Smith said. “We’re going to use that time to focus on fundamentals and get ready for the second half of the season.”
Northampton hosted Saucon Valley in a nonconference game on Tuesday. A score was not available as of press time.
The K-Kids are slated to head back into Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play tonight at Parkland.
