Union Lutheran Church, Schnecksville, collected materials for Daybreak, a mission program of the Lehigh Conference of Churches during Lent.
The organization was formed when the owner of a store in downtown Allentown responded to customer complaints about “vagrants” loitering and blocking the store’s entrance.
After learning these people had been released from the state hospital and had nowhere else to go, he called the Lehigh Conference of Churches and asked for help.
Daybreak opened in 1979. Services include a conference kitchen which provides a free meal three times a day, five days a week to people in need.
The conference housing program offers rental assistance, furniture and support for those needing a place to live.
The organization has an outreach team to connect with the homeless by providing supplies and building trust relationships.
