Roughs look for improved defense
Catasauqua baseball manager Steve Bradley understands the meaning of patience. Through their first four games, the Rough Riders were 1-3 overall.
Their lone win was a 16-1 rout of Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg, while they suffered an 18-4 loss to Southern Lehigh, a 5-1 decision to Saucon Valley, and an 8-0 defeat to Northwestern.
Through it all, however, there has been one common thread - errors.
“We’re steadily waking up,” offered Bradley. “Right now, our fielding is hurting us. We’re giving up too many unearned runs with our errors. Along with the errors, we were missing cutoff men. We are hitting the ball hard, but we are hitting it right at people.”
Bradley noted the game against Southern Lehigh was within their grasp.
“We were up 3-2,” said Bradley. “It was a good game for four innings, and we hit the snot out of the ball. But then we had some errors that hurt us.”
The same script followed with Saucon Valley. Bradley was pleased with Alex Bolmer’s outing.
“Bolmer threw a good game, but we didn’t back him up,” said Bradley. “We had five errors, and we gave it to them.”
Against Northwestern, Bradley saw some improvements.
“I would say that we played better in the field,” said Bradley. “That was a game where we had trouble hitting.”
Bradley does like the early signs from his pitching staff, notably Bolmer, Reese Savercool, Luis Collazo, Joey Conway, and Reece Lopez. Savercool was 1-1 with an 8.64 ERA, and Conway has an ERA of 3.50.
“Bolmer and Savercool have been throwing the ball really well,” said Bradley. “They really all are starting to put it together.”
Offensively, Collazo was hitting a team-high .455 and Asael Gonzalez was at .413. Conway was hitting .350, and Savercool was at .300. Bradley also cited designated hitter Steel Martell and second baseman Cody Roth. The team had a batting average of .278.
Bradley also noted the play of catcher Evan Reed, who missed last year with an injury.
“We are hitting better,” said Bradley. “Asael has been doing a great job as our leadoff hitter. Evan Reed is doing a great job behind the plate.”
The Rough Riders have a challenging week ahead with games against Palmerton and Notre Dame of Green Pond this week, both of whom entered the week with 4-1 records.
“We just have to keep working,” said Bradley. “Our guys are working, and I think we’ll come around.”
