Serving up support for K-9s

Echo, one of the Salisbury Police department’s K-9 officers, and his handler, officer Kyle Watson, were on duty at the Eastern Salisbury Fire Department’s 1000 E. Emmaus Ave. fire station March 25. Their task was to greet residents and talk about the value canines bring to police work in the Salisbury community.

The purpose of the event was a fundraiser to benefit the department’s K-9 unit and somewhat ease the police budget for other productive efforts.

A food truck from Vince’s Cheesesteaks dispensed comfort food, with a portion of sales going to the fundraiser. ESFD officers sold official K-9 unit T-shirts and hoodies.

But, the star of the day was Echo, whose mild manner and friendly greetings had adults and youngsters down to his eye level, making friends.

Whatever money comes in, Watson said, “goes to everyday maintenance items needed by our K-9s.”

Watson said he was pleased by the turnout. “The weather is pleasant, and we see a lot of our residents coming out to support us and picking up lunch and dinner items,” Watson said.
