Cobblestone Court parking restrictions discussed

Alburtis Borough Council met for its regular meeting March 25; during public comments, Alburtis Baseball Coordinator Scott Shotwell thanked council for recent field improvements and for assistance in covering a portion of this year’s umpire fees. He noted those costs are expected to increase and requested additional financial support moving forward.

Council President Ron DeIaco expressed his appreciation for the update and said the request would be considered as part of next year’s budget discussions.

Next, council approved the minutes from its March 11 meeting and authorized payment of the latest bills.

Council also received the fiscal consultant’s report, which offered a snapshot of the borough’s financial position and ongoing budget oversight.

Mayor Hector Moss was not in attendance to provide a report.

Under new business, council discussed potential security upgrades at borough hall, reviewing options to enhance safety for staff and visitors, particularly during times when police officers are not on site.

Borough Manager Stephen Nemeth estimated the cost of the improvements at approximately $9,000, including the installation of a new buzz-in entry system and noted the expense could be covered within the existing budget. While council members agreed the buzz-in system would be a valuable addition, they opted to table the matter for a future meeting, choosing not to approve the expenditure at this time.

Moving on to the next item on the agenda, council members questioned whether to proceed with the hiring process for an upcoming maintenance position, citing budget concerns and noting the current employee is not expected to leave for a few months.

Nemeth emphasized the importance of maintaining adequate staffing to address routine maintenance and infrastructure needs, adding the hiring process – including interviews, selection and training – will require time. Council ultimately approved moving forward with the hiring process, with the intent of having a new employee begin in June.

Parking regulations were another focus of discussion, with council reviewing potential changes that could include 72-hour parking limits, restricted daytime parking hours and other provisions. Members considered how such adjustments might address concerns related to long-term vehicle storage and traffic flow while balancing the needs of residents.

Council directed Solicitor Dave Knerr to draft a formal ordinance restricting parking on Cobblestone Court 9-11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, similar to what is in place on Main Street. A formal vote will be held at the next regular council meeting.

With no further business, council adjourned the meeting and later entered executive session to discuss personnel matters.
