Northampton girls lacrosse team aims to keep improving

For the Northampton girls’ lacrosse team, winning hasn’t been a common thing.

Over the past five years, the Konkrete Kids have amassed 10 wins. They were coming off a 1-17 campaign last season.

After an 0-3 start this season, the Kids gained their first victory with an 11-9 victory over Upper Perkiomen Monday.

Lauren Rez netted three goals and had four assists, and Brooke Spadaccia, Emma Schall, and Anna Caizzo each recorded two goals. Mary Drosnock, Lily Yusko, and Jaci Horton each had a goal. Emily Drusnock had 12 saves.

Yet, Northampton head girls’ lacrosse coach Vince Gonsalves is staying optimistic that his team could be turning the corner. Gonsalves has been with the program since it transformed from a club status in 2013, and had been involved with the game for more than 18 years.

“We need to have all facets of the game clicking at the same time in order to become competitive in the EPC (East Penn Conference). We are just not there yet,” he said. “But our team is still growing. We have our largest roster since COVID with 35 girls.”

The Kids have as seasoned of a roster as they ever had with 11 seniors in the mix. Gonsalves will look to senior captains Julia Behnke, Javier Horton and Lily Yusko along with our leading scorer Lauren Reznick to set the space for the rest of the season. Reznick tallied 32 goals last season. Sophomore captain Lauren Drosnock is back in the nets.

“Lauren should surpass 150 career points this year,” said Gonsalves. “Julia Behnke picked up lacrosse her sophomore year and has natural leadership ability. Emily Drosnock has been solid in the nets.”

Gonsalves also sees a youth movement on his team led by freshmen Hayden Lopata, Hailey Lieberman and Avianna McDermott. He also believes his team can reach another level this season.

“We are all working hard to develop a positive culture,” added Gonsalves. “That will foster love of the game and retention.”
