Jenkins siblings eye big spring
Hamaad and Hailey Jenkins are both anxious for the upcoming track season. Catasauqua’s brother and sister team want to leave their final marks in the senior seasons.
Hamaad was third at districts and 12th at states in the 200, while Hailey was second in the 100 and 200 at districts and ninth in states in the 100. Hailey was first in the 100 and 200 at leagues.
Both will be laser-focused in their approach.
“I see the track season ahead as a season where everything matters now, every race, every meal, every step,” emphasized Hamaad. “I’m not the freshman who was thrown in the spotlight, the sophomore who has something to prove or the junior who has to defend what’s his but now the senior with a big target on his back, so I have to be on my A game every race.”
His goals are set, and he is ready to go.
“Some goals I have are to consistently break my PRs every meet and just win. A great goal would be to break 22 in the 200 but it’s one race at a time,” added Hamaad, who will attend St. Bonaventure University for track. “I’m actually not that out of shape considering we condition at basketball and I have been doing some training on my own.
“My body is kind of used to the lactic acid and body aches by now. I also want to get faster so by the time I get to college I will be a very competitive athlete in their conference.”
His sister shares his thoughts.
“I’m very excited going into this season,” gushed Hailey. “My goals for this season are to defend my league championships in the 100 and 200. I also hope to become a district champ in those two events and at least medal in states.”
Like her brother, Hailey has benefited from basketball.
“I’d say I’m already in pretty good shape due to basketball,” added Hailey. “There’s just certain muscles that need to be a little more conditioned.”
Head coach Kyle Rusnock believes the duo can establish themselves early.
“Hamaad and Hailey are looking great,” exclaimed Rusnock. “They look in shape and ready to go. We plan to just fine tune some little things as the season progresses.
“We have high expectations for them this season and this post season,” Rusnock added. “The ultimate goal is to medal in the post season and the state meet. They both will have some good competition throughout which will help them throughout.”
