‘Seize the day’
Northampton Area High School is preparing to stand up for the little guy during the production of “Newsies: The Musical,” set for 7 p.m. March 27, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. March 28 and 1 p.m. March 29 on the auditorium stage, 1619 Laubach Ave.
With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein, the musical is based on the 1992 Walt Disney Pictures film of the same name written by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White. “Newsies” in turn was inspired by the real-life 1899 newsboys strike in New York City.
The 2012 Broadway production garnered two wins out of eight Tony Award nominations.
Notable songs include “Carrying the Banner,” “Watch What Happens,” “The World Will Know,” “Seize the Day,” “Something to Believe In” and “Once and for All.”
The cast of the NAHS Theatre Company’s production includes Max Van Antwerp as Jack Kelly (Understudy: Javien Florian), Francea Towler as Katherine Plumber (Understudy: Lana Weiko), Javien Florian as Crutchie (Understudy: Ada Steeley), JosMarie Mateo as Davey (Understudy: Effie Toole) and Izzy Toohey as Les.
The Manhattan Newsies are played by Chloe Ryan, Maddie Michael, Chloe Lochorri, Hailey Laury, Honour Raub, Effie Toole, Jasmine Evanetz, Lana Weiko, Emma Luipersbeck, Kaylie Simmons, Joey Caruso, Gianni Caruso, Keely Holland, Abby Weist and Violette Pasini.
The Brooklyn Newsies are comprised of Tori Hand, Olivia Case, Ant Curto, Tristan Greenawalt, Karly Hirsch, Kennley Kumernitsky, Lainey Morrissey, Bella Rossanese and Anna Sekol.
Additional cast members include Madelyn Johnston, Kahlyn Patterson, Ada Steeley, Aveda Greenberg, Louis Lopez, Todd Word, Sarah Constant, Katherine Deshler, Vivienn Giordano, Autumn Maikits, Logan Pierson Balik, Brody McCann, Jake Murphy, Dillon Supers, Kaiah Jaeger and Olivia Case.
