About 25 city employees and residents gathered at Payrow Plaza on a chilly and windy morning March 13 to recognize upcoming St. Patrick’s Day with an Irish flag raising.
“There’s a lot for us to celebrate here today,” said Mayor J. William Reynolds, who noted business contributions in Bethlehem from those with Irish lineage.
Local business owner Neville Gardner, who came to Bethlehem forty-six years ago from Ireland, hoisted the Irish flag to its position. “I’m glad the city acknowledges Celtic heritage,” remarked Gardner.
Three members of the Liberty HS Grenadier Band performed the American National Anthem and two of the band’s bagpipers also attended and played a short selection of Celtic tunes.
Refreshments were served afterward in the city hall Rotunda.
“It’s an exciting time to celebrate Irish traditions,” says Mayor J. William Reynolds.
