Trojans go 1-1 in girls basketball state tournament

The Parkland High School girls basketball team continued its hot play into states over the weekend.

After defeating a tough Nazareth team in the District 11 6A consolation game, the Trojans earned a spot in the PIAA playoffs and won their first-round game last Friday, beating District 12’s place team Philadelphia Central High School 50-15 at Ben Franklin High School.

Four nights later in a second-round game at Martz Hall, Parkland’s season came to an end in a 79-46 defeat to District 2 champ Hazelton.

In the win over Central, Parkland led 13-2 after the first quarter and outscored the Lancers 14-3 in the second to take a 27-5. The Trojans outscored Central 23-10 in the second half.

Cheryllana Cunningham led the offense with 13 points and connected on a team-high three 3-pointers. Aneri McGalla finished with eight points, including two 3-pointers. Isabella Hallal tallied six points and both Addison Fritzinger and Tatiana Rico-Gray netted five points.

Against the Cougars, Hazleton took control of the game with strong second and third quarters. The Trojans held right with the Cougars through the first quarter, trailing 20-18, but Hazleton then outscored them 27-11 in the second quarter to take a 47-29 lead at halftime. A 24-6 third quarter then pushed the Cougars out to a 71-35 advantage after three, and could cruise through the final frame.

Cunningham once again paced the offense with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. McGalla tallied nine points and Spang had six.

Parkland finished the 2025-26 season at 20-7 overall and will graduate a large group of eight seniors, including McGalla, Hallal, Fritzinger, Brooke Ackerman, Kate Blenis, Savannah Gonzalez, Haley Hudson and Katie Sammarco.
