Three PHS girls place in Hershey
The high school wrestling season came to a close this past week with the culmination of the PIAA Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey.
Four Parkland wrestlers competed in the girls tournament that concluded on Saturday.
In her second trip to states, senior Angelina Spachman was the highest finisher for Parkland after going 4-2 in the 136-pound weight class. As the No. 9 seed, she outlasted Octorara’s Ella Tuefert for a 2-1 victory in the fifth-place match.
Spachman’s tournament got off to a quick start after she pinned Abigail Dolanch of Avella late in the third period of their first-round match. A 17-9 major decision defeat against eventual champion Zoe Furman of Montgomery, however, sent Spachman into the consolation bracket.
But her confidence never wavered. Spachman responded and pinned No. 2 seed Brookelyn McClain of Fort Cherry in the next bout. Then, the Trojan senior used a second-period escape for the only point in a 1-0 decision victory over Owen J. Roberts’ Raylyn Schwoyer.
Sarah Pearson, the third-place finisher in the weight class, then took down Spachman via a 4-0 decision that positioned her in that fifth-place match.
Junior Natalie Deutsch placed sixth in the 148-pound weight class, and had to respond after an opening loss by fall against the No. 3 seed in the bracket, Big Spring’s Lily Raudabaugh. The Trojan junior won her next three matches to advance to the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
Deutsch won by forfeit in her opening-round consolation match against Honesdale’s Maddison Miller, then pinned Julionna Loux of Wyomissing late in the second period of her next match. Deutsch took care of business in a 6-2 decision over North Penn’s Daniella Maxwell that guaranteed her a top-six finish.
Deutsch fell by fall against Giada Companella of Pine-Richland in the consolation semifinal, before coming up short in the fifth-place match against General McLane’s Whisper Abercrombie via fall as well.
Like Deutsch, junior Liz Karla Grullon-Vasquez dropped her opening-round match, but didn’t let that define her as she won three matches in the consolation bracket to place seventh at 190.
After the opening setback, Grullon-Vasquez pinned Taylor Stewart of Mifflinburg in the second period. She picked up her second pin in as many matches when she defeated Williamsport’s Mia Davis in the next bout.
A loss in the next round sent Grullon-Vasquez into the seventh-place match where she had little trouble. The Trojan junior pinned MacKenna Atkinson of Souderton in the second period to complete her tournament run, which was her second time competing at states.
Sophomore Peyton Schneck was dealt a tough task in her opening-round match against Shaler Area’s Blythe Letters, who eventually went on to place third in the 106-pound bracket. Letters jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 5-0 decision.
Rachel Clouse of Northern Bedford ended Schneck’s run at states with a 5-4 decision.
