PHS swimmers excel at state meet
The Parkland swimming and diving teams finished their seasons at last week’s PIAA Championship meet, held annually at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.
Four Trojan individuals and five relay teams earned medals at the meet, which saw Parkland finish fifth in both the girls and boys team standings.
Parkland’s girls medley relay team opened the meet by posting the top time (1:42.54) in its preliminary heat then returning to finish second in finals in 1:40.98.
That team included seniors Kelsey McPeek and Milla Hahn, along with junior Sydney LaBaugh and sophomore Baylee Kish.
McPeek, Hahn and Kish swam in all three girls relay races at states, with Hahn and Kish deciding to add n relay and drop the individual medley after qualifying in that event.
“A week out from coming here we sat down and talked about it,” said McPeek, who also swam three relays at districts. “Baylee and Milla decided they were going to drop their IMs and join me in all three relays to see what that would get us. It was a little experiment and it turned out well for us. We’re all happy with the outcome and where we placed.”
Parkland took fourth in the girls 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:34.91 with the team of McPeek, Kish, Milla Hahn and sophomore Farrah Hahn.
The Trojans finished 13th in the girls 400 free relay in 3:36.04 with the foursome of McPeek, Kish, Milla Hahn and Farrah Hahn.
McPeek earned the top individual finish for Parkland, finishing second in the 100-yard breaststroke.
She was second in preliminary heats with a time of 1:02.65 before her 1:01.89 was good for second place in finals.
“I feel really good about it,” McPeek said. “I’m very happy with what I’ve done and how I got to close out my high school swim career.”
LaBaugh earned a medal in all three of her state meet swims. In addition to the relay, she finished fourth in backstroke in 55.59 after swimming the prelim in 55.65. She also placed fourth in butterfly in 55.44, where she went 56.02 in the preliminary heat.
“I was hoping to go faster times, but it is what it is,” LaBaugh said. “I’ve just got to keep training.
“I wanted to go 54 in both because those are my best times. But I broke the records at my high school so it was a really good accomplishment.”
Junior Dominic Faenza and senior Thomas Price both left states with medal in all four events they swam.
Faenza took fifth place in the 500 freestyle in 4:33.26 after swimming the prelim in 4:31.87, which was a personal best by three seconds.
He also finished seventh in the 200 free in 1:40.54 after a career best 1:40.18 in finals.
“I added in finals again but did go a best time in prelims,” Faenza said. “I’m happy about it. I’m glad I medaled. But I’m a little disappointed.”
Price took sixth place in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.42 after a 49.31 prelim swim.
“There’s always things that could be better,” Price said. “I wanted to be better. My takeaway is that it was my last meet. I had a lot of fun and I had some swims that I’m super happy with. I’m really grateful.
“I had some numbers in mind but overall I’m happy where I ended up.”
Price and junior Jacob Piccini were part of all three Trojan relay teams and secured medals in all of them. Price dropped his 100-yard freestyle to compete in all the relays at his final state meet.
“I felt like our relays had really good chances,” he said. “And we made A finals in all three. I wanted to take it with the guys all the way and get good placing. Glad this year I could come and get my medals and finally make A final in the 400 free relay.”
Parkland’s relay teams all finished in the top six at states, where the top eight finishers earn medals.
The medley ream team of juniors Quinn Conway, Ethan Coleman, Price and Piccini finished fifth in 1:3369.
The 200 free relay team of Piccini, Faenza, Price and freshman Dominic Yeager took sixth place in 1:24.80.
Parkland’s boys 400 freestyle relay team of Piccini, Faenza, Coleman and Price finished sixth in 3:07.17, which was the exact time they swam in the prelim.
Other Parkland swimmers who competed in individual events at states include Coleman (11th in breaststroke in 57.03;18th in IM in 1:55.32), Kish (10th in backstroke in 55.56), junior Charlie Epstein (12th in diving at 420.90), Farrah Hahn (14th in breaststroke in 57.87), Milla Hahn (21st in breaststroke in 1:06.69) and Conway (25th in backstroke in 53.58).
Several Trojan seniors capped careers that saw them reach the state meet in every year of high school.
“It was so fun,” said Kelsey McPeek. “I think this is one of the most fun meets I’ve ever been to. ) This whole season in general we’ve had such and amazing group and I love them so much. I’m so proud of all of us.”
Parkland’s girls finished fifth in the team standings with 129 points. Upper Dublin won the boys team title with 257 points, followed by North Allegheny (225), Fox Chapel (150) and State College (149).
Parkland’s boys team also took fifth place after finishing with 130 points. North Allegheny (227) won the boys team title with LaSalle College Prep (190), Upper St. Clair (144) and Chambersburg (139) rounding out the top four.
