PHS girls win sixth straight D-11 gold
Parkland entered the District 11 Swimming Championships with a veteran team full of swimmers who had already accomplished a lot in their high school careers.
All of them wanted to accomplish more at this year’s meet and were successful in that goal.
The Trojans came away from the meet with six gold medals in individual events and three more for relay teams. They also broke a pair of district records at the meet.
Parkland’s girls team secured it’s sixth straight district title and its 29th in program history.
“It’s super-exciting,” said Parkland head coach Allie McPeek. “They’ve been swimming together since they were little in summer swim leagues and against each other and they’ve maintained those friendships the past four years.”
In the meet’s very first swimming event Friday, the Parkland girls 200-yard medley relay team of seniors Kelsey McPeek and Milla Hahn, junior Sydney LaBaugh and sophomore Baylee Kish won by over eight seconds with a district record time of 1:46.42.
“My team and I have been working so hard for that,” said Kish, who won two individual events at the meet. “We’re really excited for the state meet.”
The previous record was set in 2024 by LaBaugh, McPeek, Hahn and Sophia Cerimele.
Two events later, Kish won the first of her two individual district titles when she swam the individual medley in 2:09.33 to edge Hahn (2:10.13).
“I was happy with how I started and I just wanted to keep going,” Kish said. “I think my freestyle won me the race. She’s an awesome breaststroker so I fell behind there.
“I was hoping for under 2:10 and I’m excited to see what comes from it.”
Kish picked up her second gold medal when she finished the 100 backstroke in 55.90 Saturday with LaBaugh (56.47) in second place. The Trojans had the top four finishers in backstroke as sophomore Farrah Hahn was third and freshman Mackenzie Resh fourth.
LaBaugh, swimming two individual events on the same day Friday, took first place in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.25.
“It always feels great just to know that I did that for my team,” she said. “It wasn’t my best of the season, but it was still a solid time. I wanted to get the record but I still have states to do that.”
It took until late in the meet Saturday for the Trojan girls team to pick up its final individual gold medal.
Kelsey McPeek swam a 1:02.03 in the 100-yard breaststroke to break the district record set by Parkland’s Megan Sicinski (1:03.57) in 2018.
The senior had been looking for a new personal best time in the event since freshman year when she came close to breaking the Parkland pool and school records.
After breaking both of those records with a time of 1:02.72 in a dual meet against Emmaus, McPeek was just looking to post a good district time heading into states.
“I wasn’t really expecting [to break a record] again,” she said. “It was kind of just go out and have fun and do your best.”
As one of several Trojan seniors in this year’s district meet, McPeek and her teammates have just one meet left in their high school careers.
“I’ve been with these people not only for high school but also club swimming when we were five years old,” she said. “It’s a weird feeling. I’m happy I got all this time with them. They were the best group of girls that I could have been a senior with. They’re all my best friends.”
A pair of repeat champions also led Parkland’s boys team at districts as Dominic Faenza and Thomas Price both earned one individual gold medal and one silver each at the meet.
Price, a senior, won the 100-yard butterfly in 50.40 second, edging Emmaus’ Carter Smith by .32.
“This is definitely my favorite event,” said Price, who repeated as district champ in butterfly. “I do feel a bit of relief because the competition in this race is really good swimmers.
“It was a tiring race. This year I’m not tapered. I’m excited to taper for states. I definitely had some nerves going into this because I knew it was going to be exhausting.”
Price also took second place in the 100 freestyle in 45.66.
Faenza put in a district-record breaking swim Friday in the 200 freestyle only to get out-touched for the win and the record by Emmaus senior Roman Herman, who finished in 1:40.32 with Faenza at 1:40.74.
The Trojan junior returned Saturday and left the second-place finisher in his wake with a 4:34.75 in the 500-yard freestyle for first place over Emmaus’ Reid Lovett (4:43.64).
It was Faenza’s second straight district title in the event.
“Very happy about it. I think everyone else did pretty well too,” he said. “This is the first year I didn’t fully rest for districts, more focused on states so I’m pretty happy with the results.
“It definitely feels pretty good getting it back to back. Hopefully next year I can get the three-peat.”
Faenza was also part of two first-place relay teams.
He swam the 200-yard freestyle relay with freshman Dominic Yeager and seniors Jacob Grab and Price. They finished in 1:26.70 to edge Emmaus by .03 with Price swimming the anchor leg.
In another close race against Emmaus, Faenza swam the anchor leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay after junior teammates Jacob Piccini, Quinn Conway and Ethan Coleman. They finished in 3:10.68, which was .05 ahead of Emmaus.
The Parkland girls team also capped the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of LaBaugh, sophomore Farrah Hahn, McPeek and Kish swam the event in 3:32.99 with Emmaus (3:34.38) finishing second.
Plenty of other Parkland individuals and relay teams left the district meet with medals, which went to the top four finishers in each event.
Taking second place at the meet were freshman Colleen Piccini (butterfly); Jacob Piccini (50 free); Milla Hahn (breaststroke); Coleman (IM and breaststroke); junior Charlie Epstein (diving); freshman Mackenzie Resh (200 free); sophomore Kenzi Schultz (500 free) the boys medley relay team of Conway, Coleman, Price and Jacob Piccini; and the girls 200 free relay team of McPeek, sophomore Mazie Fleischaker, Farrah Hahn and Milla Hahn
Trojans who finished third at the meet include Farrah Hahn (200 freestyle), senior Ella Rafeld (500 free), sophomore CJ Denton (diving), junior Sam Schultz (diving) and Jacob Piccini (100 free).
Fourth place finishers from PHS were senior Ari Levin (diving), Fleischaker (IM and butterfly), freshman Dominic Yeager (50 free), Conway (backstroke), freshman Victoria Tewksbury (breaststroke) and Kenzie Schultz (200 free).
District champs earn automatic qualification to the PIAA Championship meet, scheduled for March 11-12 at Bucknell University. Other swimmers could still qualify for states based on their times compared to times from other district meets across the state with the fastest times filling in the field in each event along with district champs.
