Parkland boys wrestlers head into districts

The District 11 Class 3A Boys Wrestling Tournament gets underway on Friday, and a number of Parkland wrestlers will look to find a place on the podium at the culmination of the two-day event.

One Trojan, in particular, is looking to build off his regional-qualifying performance in last year’s district run.

Jorge Moya, who placed fifth last winter at districts, was the only Trojan that qualified for regionals and is looking to reach that stage once again.

Jorge Moya, a senior, went 25-9 during the regular season mainly at 160 pounds. Eight of his wins came via fall, six by way of technical fall, and four by major decision.

Sophomore Donato Ciampittiello was the only other Trojan who placed in the top six of his weight class at districts a season ago. He comes into the postseason with an 18-10 record—with 14 of those wins coming by way of fall or technical fall—looking to reach the medal stand once again.

While Jorge Moya and Ciampittiello were the two returning district medal-winners, plenty of others are hoping to make noise as well in 2026. With the top six finishers in each weight class earning a medal—and the top five advancing to regionals—head coach Eddie Keichel and the Trojans are hoping to bring more than one wrestler to regionals this season.

Sophomore Braden Todora and junior Luis Moya have each won 29 matches so far this season, with only a combined six losses this winter. Todora (29-2)—who has wrestled in nearly every match at 114 pounds—won his first 22 matches of the season. Of his 29 wins, 22 have earned bonus points for the Trojans.

Luis Moya (29-4) competed in every match except for one at 107, making he and Todora a formidable one-two punch in the light weight classes. He enters the postseason by winning his last four matches by technical fall, with 10 of his 29 wins coming by way of fall.

Junior Matthew Velez (27-9) is another 25-plus winner for the Trojans during the regular season who has his eyes set on a district medal. All but one of his matches this season came in the 133-pound weight class, and Velez’s nine wins by fall ranks fourth on the team.

A number of other Trojans enter the district tournament with .500 or better records looking to put together successful outings as well. Junior Myles Lysek (19-11) is the most decorative of those four wrestlers, winning 10 of his 19 matches by way of fall, which is tied for best on the team.

Senior Max Pugach (12-11), junior Jaren Santilli (13-13) and freshman Tycen Norman (10-9) represent the over three Trojans at .500 or better. Pugach—who has competed at 215 pounds all season—is also tied for the most pins on the team with 10. Santilli has received bonus points in nine of his 13 wins, which has largely come at 139 pounds. And Norman, who has competed at both 139 and 145 pounds, has won three of his last four matches heading into districts.
