Moya wins NE Regional gold

Luis Moya didn’t let his loss in the District 11 Class 3A championship match against Notre Dame-Green Pond’s Maximus Quarry dictate his future goals.

A week after falling to the Crusader 107-pounder, Moya had a chance to avenge that loss. And he took advantage of the opportunity.

Moya defeated Quarry in a rematch in the championship bout at this past weekend’s PIAA Northeast Class 3A Regional Tournament, securing gold with a 7-3 decision.

“I knew I had a better chance at changing my style a little bit,” Moya said. “Getting comfortable with his style, and making him wrestle my style and keep my offense up.”

One major change the Trojan junior implemented at regionals was his stance when the two grappled on their feet.

“I was staying on his level,” Moya said. “Instead of leading with my right foot, because that’s all he was going for was a high single to that side. I led with my left foot and he didn’t shoot once. Just changing my level and attacking off that.”

Moya also brought a new sense of confidence a week later, especially after he proved to himself that he could take down Quarry like he did at districts. It resulted in his first postseason gold medal of his high school career.

“I slowly saw him break after that,” Moya said. “Everyone is beatable, so I just kept going after it.”

Moya opened the tournament with a quick first-period pin over Wallenpaupack’s Greg Nalesnik. He then took down Ryan Milheim of Columbia Montour Vo-Tech, 5-4, in the quarterfinal round, and followed that up with a dominant 10-3 victory over Stroudsburg’s Jack Jasionowicz in the semifinals to clinch his first trip to the state championship meet.

“It felt amazing,” Moya said. “It feels unreal. This is my first time at district and regionals, so yeah [I was a little nervous]. I just gave it my all.”

Braden Todora (114 pounds) and Jorge Moya (160) placed fourth and fifth at their respective weight classes at regionals, and will join Luis Moya at states this week.

Todora opened the tournament by winning his first two matches: a 17-1 technical fall against St. Joseph’s Prep Sam Zuchman and a 5-1 decision against Williamsport’s Jordan Piselli. A 7-1 setback against Hazelton’s Gabe Benyon sent the Trojan sophomore to the consolation bracket.

Todora outlasted Abington Heights’ Dakota Sandy to guarantee a spot at states with an 8-7 decision. His run in regionals came to an end against Notre Dame’s Cael Muller in the third-place match.

Jorge Moya took an even more difficult path to qualifying for states.

After a loss in his second match — a 17-2 technical fall against West Scranton’s Tommy Schechterly — Moya won his next two bouts. He picked up a 13-1 major decision over Central’s Ameer Johnson, and then pinned Jersey Shore’s Tobias Morget in 3:46.

A 6-5 setback against Northampton’s Carter Chlebove sent Moya into a win-and-advance scenario with a fifth-place match against Emmaus’ Xyler Sallit. And Moya took care of business, advancing to states with a convincing 18-10 major decision.

The PIAA Class 3A Championships are set for March 5-7 at the Giant Center in Hershey. The preliminary and first round matches begin Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
