Kroope earns fourth place in Hershey

Emmaus’ Olivya Kroope wasn’t fully healthy when she competed at last year’s state tournament. A year later and nothing holding her back, the Hornet senior made a name for herself on the biggest stage in Pennsylvania high school wrestling.

Kroope went 3-2 and finished in fourth place of the 155-pound weight class at this past weekend’s PIAA Class Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey. Kroope’s run came to an end in the third-place match against Mt. Lebanon’s Camilla Hathaway via a second-period pin.

The Hornet senior made a statement with her opening-round first-period pin over Hamburg’s Daisy Nemes. The momentum carried into the quarterfinal round when Kroope took down No. 6 seed Makayla Taylor of Clearfield via a 14-2 major decision. Kroope jumped out to an 11-0 advantage in the first period against Taylor and nearly picked up her second pin in as many matches.

A 9-0 major decision setback in the semifinals against Abington Heights’ Hayden Manning sent Kroope into the consolation bracket. In that consolation match, Kroope outlasted Neshaminy’s Annette Barry with an 11-10 major decision victory to keep her tournament run alive.

Kroope jumped ahead 11-0 after a near fall at the end of the second period before Barry mounted an insurmountable comeback in the third period.
