Five Trojan grapplers reach regionals
Parkland sent just one wrestler to regionals last season after Jorge Moya placed fifth at the 2025 district tournament.
A year later, Moya is returning to regionals and leads a group of fie Trojan grapplers to the event after he placed second in the 160-pound weight class of the PIAA District 11 Class 3A Championships this past weekend at Liberty High School.
Jorge’s brother, Luis Moya, was the other Trojan district runner-up at 107 pounds. Braden Todora (114 pounds, third place), Matthew Velez (127, fourth place), and Myles Lysek (285, fifth place) will also represent Parkland at regionals.
“The hope was to get five, six or seven guys through to regionals,” head PHS head coach Eddie Keichel said. “We ended up having seven wrestlers medal, with five making it through. That’s positive for those guys to be on the podium. That was the hope and the plan, and I’d say we executed pretty well with that.”
The Moya brothers headlined the show, with Jorge outperforming his seeding.
Jorge, the No. 3 seed in the 160-pound bracket, pinned his first opponent in a little over a minute. He then had little trouble with two dominant decision victories in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
“I feel like I wrestled really well the whole tournament,” Jorge Moya said. “In the final match, I got a little stiff and felt under pressure being my first time in the finals. I never faced him before so it was a new style.”
“That was a big accomplishment for him going from fifth to second,” Keichel said. “Moving onto next week, he’s trying to make that next jump to get out to Hershey.”
Luis Moya, the No. 2 seed in the 107-pound weight class, coasted in his first two matches with a first-minute pin and a 21-6 technical fall in the quarterfinals. He then defeated Bethlehem Catholic’s Michael Nicosia in the semifinals via a 4-1 decision to advance to the championship bout.
Luis Moya missed the postseason last winter after breaking his ankle. He suited up in junior varsity during his freshman season, so Saturday’s runner-up performance was his first taste of district competition.
“I think I could have been better on offense and my attacks,” Luis Moya said. “Just moving more and working on my offense.
“My goal this season was to make district finals, regional finals and hopefully place at states.”
After losing in the semifinals round that sent Todora into the consolation bracket, the Parkland sophomore responded with a dominant tech fall win and a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Elijah Heimbach to end his tournament on a high note.
Velez also won his final two matches after losing in the semifinals round of the 127-pound bracket. Lysek responded nicely after his quarterfinal round loss and won two of his final three matches.
Two other Trojans earned medals and placed sixth at districts in Jared Santilli (139) and Donato Ciampittiello (172).
Santilli was close to booking a trip to regionals as well.
“He knocked off a (returning) state-qualifier in the consolation quarterfinals, and then had a state medalist on the ropes in the fifth-place match,” Keichel said. “He was seconds away from qualifying for regionals. For him that was a big step, coming in with a .500 record. He wrestled really tough, and it was some of the best wrestling I’ve seen out of him.”
The PIAA Northeast Regional 3A Tournament is set for Friday and Saturday back at Liberty High School. The preliminary round matches begin at 5 p.m. on Friday evening. Saturday’s competition begins at 9:30 a.m.
