Falcons enter D-11 tourney
The Colonial League championship came with a bye in the quarterfinals of districts.
That would have been a nice situation for the Falcons to have since the quarterfinals have not been kind to them. In each of the past four seasons, Salisbury – twice as a 3A team and twice as a 4A team – has lost in the quarterfinals of the District 11 tournament.
So, this season, head coach Jason Weaver and his team have to again play in the quarterfinals, and they have to travel to Lehighton High School where they will face Wilson.
During the regular season, Salisbury beat Wilson 68-46.
“We have some things to work on,” Weaver said after his team’s loss to Northwestern in the league semifinals. “So we’ll get back in the gym and put the time that we have to good use. We can’t hang our heads. We have to just get back to work and keep playing for a championship.”
In the first meeting between Salisbury and Wilson, four different Salisbury players scored in double digits and the Falcons hit on six three-pointers in the win.
Defensively, Salisbury slowed down Wilson’s Lafayette Acree, who finished with 14 points.
“We have a good streak of not giving up more than 50 points in a game,” said Weaver, whose team is 17-0 this season when its opponent scores 50 or fewer points and 4-3 when it gives up over 50 points. “That is going to be a key for us because we have a good enough offense to win those games.”
Weaver also likes how well his offense can perform and feels like teams can’t prepare to shut down just one player – usually, leading scorer Lozada – because others just pick up the slack.
As for keeping his team prepared to play with an eight-day layoff between games, Weaver isn’t concerned.
In addition to working on fine tuning some things and coming up with a game plan to face Wilson, the number two seeded Falcons have not lost sight of what would be a wonderful addition to the trophy case at Salisbury High School: a District 11 championship.
“We talked about the fact that there is still another championship to play for,” said Weaver. “There’s still stuff out there that we obviously want to get.”
The winner of the Salisbury and Wilson game will face the winner of the Allentown Central Catholic and Lehighton game, which is also being played Friday night, but at Allen High School.
