EHS girls basketball beats Liberty, reaches D-11 semi

The Emmaus High School girls basketball team had been looking forward to its District 11 quarterfinal round game ever since it was announced.

The third-seeded Hornets were matched up against sixth-seeded Liberty in a rematch of last season’s district consolation game in which Liberty defeated Emmaus, ending the Hornets’ season.

Emmaus got revenge during the regular season this year, winning the only meeting 72-40. The Hornets did a little more when it mattered more last Friday night as Emmaus got the better of Liberty 65-37 at Catasauqua High School.

Emmaus (19-6 overall) used the middle two quarters to take full control of the game as they outscored the Hurricanes 19-5 in the second quarter to take a 35-14 lead at halftime and then had an 18-5 third quarter advantage to go up by 34 after three.

The Hornets were led by their dynamic senior duo of Gabby DeVita and Olive Whitney, who combined for 34 points, with DeVita scoring a game-high 19 points and Whitney adding 15 points, connecting on four 3-pointers. Senior Sierra Stevens and sophomore Gracie Ervin both recorded nine points.

Emmaus advanced to the semifinal round and took on second-seeded Parkland, which was a 53-18 winner over seventh-seeded Freedom in a quarterfinal. The game was Tuesday nigh, after Press deadline.

It is the third consecutive time the teams have met in the semifinal round, with the Trojans (18-5) taking both. The two teams split their two matchups during the regular season with each team winning on its home court. The other semifinal round match is the top seed Easton against fourth-seeded Nazareth.
