EHS boys win title; Kenner earns SOM

For fans of the Emmaus High School swimming and diving teams, there was a lot to like about last week’s District 11 Championships.

The Hornet boys team won a District 11 title with a senior-laden team that had not raised that trophy since its freshman season.

The Emmaus girls team showed a glimpse into the future as some freshmen and sophomore swimmers put in stellar performances at the event, held at Parkland High School.

Boys take D-11 title

The Hornet boys team, with nine seniors entered in the meet, started with a points deficit after Parkland’s boys built a lead with four divers in the top eight last week.

Emmaus wasted no time cutting into the lead when Friday’s swimming events began.

The foursome of senior Bryce King, juniors Carson Mosel and Carter Smith and senior Joe Lyons edged Parkland by .08 seconds to win the medley relay in 1:34.59.

“This was the culmination of months of hard work,” said Lyons, who swam the anchor leg. “We’ve been on the same relay this whole season, just working on it throughout the whole season. This is the final showdown. We went all out. It all came together.”

With his team starting to cut into Parkland’s points lead, Lyons’ had one goal in mind.

“Last time we won [district] was our freshman year,” he said. “We just want to go out our senior year winning districts. It would be the best feeling ever.”

Senior Roman Herman played a big role in helping his friends and his team achieve that goal.

Herman won a pair of individual events at the meet, including setting a district record in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.32. He out-touched Parkland’s Dominic Faenza by half a second. Faenza also swam what would have been a district record time.

“I knew it would be a race between the two of us,” said Herman. “I knew the splits that I wanted to go. I knew if I swam my race I could get it. I had to control the first half. I had to go out in 47 flat to win it. I know he is a great back-halfer.”

Herman also had thoughts about winning the team title.

“We’ve been looking forward to this all season,” he said. “We’re sick of not winning the past two years.”

The Hornets picked up several points in the 200 freestyle as senior Reid Lovett (third), King (fourth) and senior Nate Peters (fifth) also finished in the top five.

Herman went on to win the 100 freestyle Saturday in 45.66, beating Parkland’s Thomas Price by a full second for the title. He also swam on two second-place freestyle relay teams at districts.

Smith and Lovett both earned silver medals in individual events with Smith taking second place in the butterfly and Lovett finishing second in 500 freestyle and swimming on two second place freestyle relay teams.

Lyons (50 free, 200 free relay), senior Parker Gamler (individual medley), senior Will Reichart (500 free) and King (backstroke) all earned medals for third place at districts.

Also earning medals, which went to the top four finishers in each event, were Mosel (50 free, 200 free relay), junior Graham Lovett (butterfly, breaststroke), junior Brennan Smith (100 free, 400 free relay) and Peters (500 free).

Mosel (200 free relay), Brennan Smith (400 free relay) and Peters (400 free relay) also earned silver medals as part of relay teams.

Freshmen shine for girls team

The Emmaus girls team took second place at districts to a Parkland squad that had several upperclassmen swimming in their final district meet.

Hornet freshman Kayla Kenner earned girls Swimmer of the Meet honors with wins in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. Classmate Ellie Bowen also won an individual event, taking first place in the 500-yard freestyle. Junior Mabry Krause took first place in the 200 freestyle for Emmaus.

Kenner swam the 50 in 23.34 seconds, finishing a full second ahead of second-place teammate Babs Lyons, a sophomore.

“I always figured my 50 free has always been really good,” said Kenner. “I always thought I would win that one day, but I didn’t think my freshman year.

“I really just wanted to go faster than a 23.6 and I did that.”

Kenner returned Saturday and earned her second district gold with a time of 51.26 in the 100 freestyle where teammates Krause and sophomore Sriya Reddy finished second and third, respectively.

Krause earned the first individual gold medal of the meet with her first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.69. After swimming 100 free and backstroke as a sophomore and finishing in the top five in both, Krause went back to the 200 this season and the switch paid off

“I swam it freshman year,” she said of the 200. “This year something clicked for me. I just felt great in the 200.”

Bowen won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:15.42, touching the wall four seconds before Parkland’s Kenzi Schultz in second place. Bowen also took third place in the 200-yard individual medley at districts.

The Emmaus 200-yard freestyle relay team also took first place at districts. The team of Kenner, Krause, senior Sophia Harmon and Babs Lyons finished in 1:37.09.

Second-place finishers for Emmaus at districts were Addie Cornish (diving) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Krause, Bowen, Kenner and Reddy.

Finishing in third place at the meet were Babs Lyons (butterfly) and the 200 medley relay team of Bowen, freshman Chloe Mosel, Reddy and Lyons.

Swimmers and relay teams who won events are automatically qualified to compete in the PIAA Class 3A Championship Meet March 11-12 Bucknell University. Other swimmers could still qualify based on their times, which will be compared to other times from district meets across the state with the fastest swimmers earning a place at states along with all district champs.
