Blunt pins his way to D-11 gold

Salisbury’s last District 11 wrestling champion was 10 years ago, when Alex Nicholas captured the 2A crown at heavyweight for the Falcons.

A decade later, the Falcons have another name to add to that exclusive list.

After finishing as a district runner-up last winter, Falcon sophomore Jarrod Blunt elevated his game to another level in 2026. Blunt took care of business in the 133-pound bracket, culminated with an early second-period pin over Tri Valley’s Jaxson Bruso to secure gold on Saturday evening at Liberty High School.

“I felt like I came in with a good head, a good mindset,” Blunt said. “I wrestled really aggressive on offense and did what I needed to do.”

Blunt, who received the Pinner Award in Class 2A, pinned all four of his opponents. He put Central Catholic’s Jimmy Morales on his back in just 15 seconds in his first match, then pinned Andrew Hikes of Pine Grove in the second period of the quarterfinals. He won by fall late in the first period against Northwestern’s Adam Griffith in the semifinals to set up his championship match against Bruso.

“He’s an animal,” head coach Rob Fiedler said. “When he goes out there, he’s going out to win and he’s going out to kill. It’s exciting to see, and I’m proud of him.”

“It’s been a huge goal [to get back to regionals],” Blunt said. “It’s just been getting back to proving that I could do it. [Being there last year] showed me what I need to do, where I need to be and how I need to wrestle.”

Blunt is one of two Falcons that placed in the top four of their respective weight classes to advance to next week’s PIAA Southeast Class 2A Regionals. Jacob Watson is the other at 189 pounds.

Watson, who entered as the No. 7 seed in the 189-pound bracket, won three straight matches in the blood round after a loss early in Day 2 sent him into the consolation bracket. After that loss, Watson picked up back-to-back pins over Saucon Valley’s Brittian Ash and Pine Grove’s Logan Troup, respectively.

Watson then topped No. 4 seed Preston Digrazia of Lehighton in the consolation semifinals rounds, guaranteeing him a spot it regionals and a top-four finish at districts.

“Before our Salisbury Duals, he was 9-13,” Fiedler said. “He went 6-0 at the duals, and really hit the peak when he needed to. Then here at districts, he got a redemption match against a Lehighton kid that he lost to earlier in the year. He struggled with a lot of injuries the past two years, and to come in and do what he did was awesome.”

The top five place-finishers of each weight class earned medals at district. In addition to Blunt and Watson capturing hardware, Jacob Spinner (121 pounds), Jordan Tocci-Wachter (152) and Sam Krauss (285) all placed fifth and left Freedom with a medal.

“Coming into the week, I told all of the kids that you have a good seed and you’re all in a position to get a placement match,” Fiedler said. “Every single kid bought in, and they all wrestled really great. Day 1, I was a little worried. We were a little shaky. But Day 2, we had a great blood round and pinned everybody that round.”

Regionals will take place on Friday and Saturday at Warwick High School in Lititz, PA. Competition begins at 4:30 p.m. with the preliminary rounds. Saturday’s competition will get underway at 9:30 a.m. The top six wrestlers of each weight class will earn a medal, with the top five advancing to states.
