LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Softball hopes to be in mix

Whitehall head coach Jeff Vivian has seen the scene in the past. Beginning his fifth year at the helm for the Zephyrs, Vivian will have to replace the entire outfielders.

But his team won the District 11 Class 5A championship in 2024, and the Zephyrs posted a 14-7 record last season.

Having a softball lifer in Vivian, the Whitehall faithful shouldn’t have any doubts the Zephyrs will be in the hunt for the East Penn Conference (EPC) crown as well as the postseason.

Still, Vivian is staying cautiously optimistic.

“We have some ground to cover,” offered Vivian. “Replacing an entire outfield will not be easy.

“But we return what we believe is one of the top pitchers and catchers in the league in Morgan Laub and Amya Espinal. Both received league honors last year as underclassmen.”

Laub, who went 10-7 with a 3.37 ERA and recorded 89 strikeouts in 108 innings, and she also hit .304 with 16 RBIs, realizes her role will increase this season.

“As a senior, I will continue to lead by example with a strong work ethic and coach-ability,” stressed Laub. “Being a pitcher comes with added pressure. However, I make sure to stay composed on the mound and be confident in my team behind me.

“Additionally, I am cognizant that I have to contribute to our offense. We lost four key contributors in our lineup last season.”

Along with Laub, the Zephyrs will bring back Espinal (.327), second baseman/outfielder Molly McFetridge (.333) shortstop Josie Shultz (.417), first baseman Jules Muth (.277), and outfielder Alyssa Dunbar (.333).

Newcomers are outfielder/pitcher Jillian Pagan, infielder Julia Schell, infielder Corynn Troxell, infielder Ari Casy, catcher Audra Sommer, and outfielder Evelyn Hudak.

The Zephyrs made their annual trip to Myrtle Beach, SC, this week, and it will be an early proving ground. Vivian is confident can peak at the end of the season.

“We feel the group that is competing for spots this year in our newcomers, might be the most athletic we have had,” beamed Vivian. “So with a little work, we feel we can compete. Myrtle Beach will go a long way in seeing just how far we have to go with this group, but I think the ending will be worth the watch.”

Morgan Laub will be back on the mound for the Whitehall softball team this spring.
