Math intervention programs discussed at curriculum and technology meeting

The Salisbury Township School District board of directors held a curriculum and technology meeting March 11 to receive student reports and as well as presentations on math interventions at the middle school level and projected enrollment and staffing levels for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Student representatives Phoebe Ballek and Brinlee Neitz informed the board about all the happenings at Salisbury High School including the end of winter sports season and highlighted the success of the boys basketball team, the swim team and the wrestling squad.

Spring sports season is already underway and the girls softball team kicked things off with a scrimmage March 12.

The SHS Theater performed the musical “The Prom” March 12-15 and the debate team finished the regular season in first place and team members are looking forward to competing in the championships slated for April 7.

SHS National Honor Society will induct new members and install new officers March 19 and NHS will host an egg hunt April 2 at the high school baseball field. Space is limited and registration is required.

Salisbury Middle School students Connor Simmons and Laura Nadel reported on the March for Adam fundraising events taking place including a pie-a-teacher-in-the-face event, a cake pop sale and a dodgeball tournament.

Seventh grade students will take a field trip to the Challenger Learning Center to take part in a simulation STEM program March 31 and April 1.

Eighth grade students in Matthew Tobias’ class participated in the American Battlefield Trust Trunk Program which provides a trunk full of reproductions of artifacts and clothing to bring the teaching of U.S. history to life.

Students Max O’Connor and Lily Segall highlighted the events that took place at Salisbury Elementary School during Read Across America Week March 2-6. Each day was themed after a book and students dressed to fit the theme and participated in activities related to books. The PTO sponsored daily book raffles.

March 18 is a day to wear yellow and blue in support of Down Syndrome Awareness Day. It will also be an early dismissal day at SES for parent/teacher conferences.

SES will be closed March 19 for all day parent conferences and all schools will be closed March 20 for a professional development day.

Math Night for Families will be held at SES 6-7:30 p.m. March 31.

SMS math intervention teacher Mike Posch provided the board with a presentation outlining how he conducts the math intervention program in grades 6-8.

Small groups of students, generally 4-6 total, are pulled from Learning Lab to work with Posch as he utilizes a targeted approach to reinforce concepts taught in their math class in an effort to help students build confidence and attain math proficiency.

Tools such as Voyage Math provide targeted practice and reinforcement while IXL provides diagnostic and benchmark data to monitor student progress.

Posch noted students and teachers seem receptive to the program but the effectiveness of the math intervention program will not be realized until Pennsylvania System of School Assessment data becomes available during the summer.

Keeping with the middle school level math intervention theme, special education teachers Alexandra Olexson, Beth Neitz and Carly Buccigrossi gave a detailed overview of the VMath program they have been piloting for the past year with learning support students.

Teachers expressed the need to find a math program that closes the gap between students’ instructional grade level and actual grade level.

Based on their positive experience piloting the VMath program the teachers recommended the district adopt the VMath curriculum for implementation with middle school learning support students.

The next item on the agenda was enrollment and staffing projections for the 2026-2027 presented by Coordinator of Human Resources Ralph Lovelidge.

Overall, the district is seeing a projected modest decline in enrollment and there appears to be little change in staffing numbers except for a shifting of assignments to meet student needs.

The 2026-2027 district enrollment is projected to be 1,421 students and the budget will be based on these enrollment numbers.

The next meeting of the curriculum and technology committee is scheduled 7 p.m. April 2. All meetings are held in the administration building, 1140 Salisbury Road, Allentown.
