Macungie police officers recognized for heroic actions

Representatives from The Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce attended the March 16 Macungie Borough Council meeting to share information about their services. Hayden Rinde, assistant vice president of the chamber said there are 30 branches of the chamber in the Lehigh Valley, making this chamber one of the largest in the state. They are in the top 10 in the country. They spoke about their involvement in the various communities. They are active participants in community events such as tree lighting events, marketing of area businesses, banners and sharing resources.

The Macungie Police Department and Lower Macungie Fire Department Fire Chief Ryan Trexler recognized Macungie Police Officer Sabdiel Diaz who rescued an elderly gentleman during a fire in Macungie recently. The gentleman’s two daughters also thanked Diaz for his heroic action.

Officer Matthew Santiago was also recognized for recent actions.

Macungie Mayor Bob Sell also recognized the officers with awards.

Trexler presented the Lower Macungie Fire Department 2025 Annual Report and said they are continually working on improving their response time.

Trexler said the department is seeking another engine. The search begins now as it can take up to four years to create the engine for their use.

Some information about fire hydrants was provided. There are approximately 700 hydrants and there are three different styles. Trexler said the engines contain items to make all hydrants accessible.

Business owner Tim Romig raised the issue of missing audio files, meeting minutes and right-to-know requests. Borough Manager Kalman Sosrarecz reminded Romig of lack of personnel and thanked him for his patience.

Macungie has a 48- month electricity provider agreement with AEP Energy. Their purpose is to aid in search of reliable suppliers.

Macungie is also working on an agreement with Astound/RCN Cable services. A resident suggested the borough look into fiber optics.

Residents were informed Emmaus Borough has a yard waste site. There is a $50 fee per family to use this service.

An executive session was held regarding personnel issues.

The next meeting is scheduled 7:30 p.m. April 6 at the Macungie Institute, 510 E. Main St., Macungie
