Bath kicks off 250th festivities

In a crowded council chamber at Bath Borough Hall, council President Frank Hesch hosted the Feb. 16 announcement and kickoff of the borough’s plans for the United States’ 250th celebration. Hesch spoke warmly about the nation’s birthday and Bath’s long, rich history.

Hesch noted Bath was founded in 1737, decades before the nation’s birth in 1776.

Of interest, the kickoff was held on Presidents Day, a national holiday. It included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and light refreshments were served. Councilwoman Lauren Bullsnake contributed her tasty, homemade fastnacht doughnuts, which were enjoyed by all.

The attendees included some elected officials, borough administration members, the 250th committee and residents. Hesch expressed gratitude for the efforts of the 250th committee members present by reading all the names of the committee.

After Hesch finished his introduction and remarks, he introduced Mayor Fiorella Reginelli Mirabito, who gave a prepared speech about her journey as a young girl immigrating to America with her family in 1968. It was a heartfelt presentation that weaved her family’s American experience with other immigrants’ experiences that led to the growth and success of the nation.

The 250th committee is planning various fundraising activities to prepare for the July 4 celebration. The America 250 golf tournament fundraiser will be held 1 p.m. April 18 at Whitetail Golf Club, 2679 Klein Road. After the golf tournament concludes, there is a dinner anyone can attend.

The big celebration begins 10 a.m. July 4 with a formal trailhead dedication ceremony at Ciff Cowling Field. Council members will each read a portion of the Declaration of Independence, and a community chorus will sing patriotic songs. The Bath Legion color guard and Bath Volunteer Fire Department plan to attend. There will be guest speakers, fife and drum marchers and much more.

There are plans for an outdoor movie July 3 at Ciff Cowling Park.

There are more activities being organized that will be announced in the coming weeks. All residents are invited to attend.
