PIAA notebook: Wagner sees career end

With Gabe Ballard and Brayden Wenrich leading the way, the K-Kids finished third in the team standings, 18.5 points behind Nazareth. It is the best finish since the 2016-2017 team also finished third.

The tournament also marked the swan song for senior Trey Wagner. The 2024 state champion finished seventh at 139. His chance to add a second state gold to his collection ended in the semifinals, 7-4 to Patrick Woloshyn of Council Rock South. A takedown with just under a minute to go that put Woloshyn up 7-2 was the decisive score.

A solid 5-0 decision in the blood round secured a state medal for Wagner.

Trey ends his Northampton career as one of 20 state champions for the K-Kids and one of only 14 three-time state medalists. His 140 wins rank eighth all-time, tied with Joey Ecklof and Tommy Rohn.

Carter Chlebove won his preliminary round match and another one in consolations to make it to the blood round where he dropped a 7-1 decision to Nathaniel Replogle of Central York.

Winning a pair of matches at states shows the progress made by the sophomore who failed to place at districts as a freshman.

Senior Matthew Sommer also won in prelims but was knocked out of the tournament with losses to a couple of state medalists, Drew Scherer of Boiling Springs (sixth) and Mason Whitney of Abington Heights (third).

This trip to Hershey also extended one of the great streaks in Northampton athletics.

For the 43rd straight year, at least one K-Kid won a state medal. That is the longest medal streak in PIAA wrestling history, and looks like a lock to be extended next year.
