NHS relay team competes at states
The Northampton boys varsity swim team has achieved something that has not been done in 20 years – they have sent a boys relay team to the PIAA state swimming championships.
This week, the 200-yard medley relay team of Josiah Hippert, Nathan Scheirer, Tobias Scott, and Logan Saylor, along with alternate Nicholas Isaac, headed to Bucknell University to compete against the fastest teams in Pennsylvania.
The group earned their spot at states with a strong, 1:37.69 finish at last month’s District XI Championships, entering the state meet seeded 25th among a field that included local powers like Parkland, Emmaus. and Nazareth.
“It will be such a different environment with so many fast swimmers at one event,” said anchor Logan Saylor, who looked forward to competing on such a big stage.
While the moment was historic for Northampton, the team’s chemistry has been years in the making.
Most of these swimmers have trained and competed together for much of their childhood through youth swim clubs and USA Swimming programs. With years of experience in the pool, swimming has become a year-round focus for the group.
That shared history has also built a strong bond within the team and created something special this year for Northampton swimming.
“This team is just different — I’ve never felt closer,” said breaststroker Nathan Scheirer.
Butterfly swimmer Tobias Scott added, “There’s just something about swimming. It gives you that home-away-from-home feeling.”
The close-knit foursome took to the blocks Wednesday morning and proudly represented Northampton at the state championships. The relay team ended their 2025-26 swim season with a 30th-place finish, adding a bit of time to their district mark, but gaining something far more valuable — an unforgettable experience and a place in Northampton swimming history.
With memories to last a lifetime and motivation to return to this momentous swimming event again next year, the team already has its sights set on the future; after all, training for the 2026-27 season is just 6 months away.
