“Madagascar JR” at St. Ann School March 13-14

Journey out of the zoo and onto the stage at St. Ann School in Emmaus March 13-14 for its spring musical production of “Madagascar JR.”

Director Denise Binder and Music Director Ariel Scholz have teamed up again for another successful production.

Binder and Assistant Director Kim Patterson also served as choreographers for the production while Scholz served as set designer and Donna Henry served as costume designer.

Ashlynn Edwards encompasses the role of the king of the “urban jungle,” Alex the Lion, with a magnetic quality. Used to being the star attraction at the Central Park Zoo, “Alex the Lion,” portrayed by Edwards, was a perfect fit for this role. She is a charismatic individual who captures the essence of the role with dramatic flair and provides entertainment with dramatic singing and dancing throughout the production.

Edwards’ sidekick “Marty the Zebra” is played by Abby Page. Page brings a necessary genuine curiosity to the role of Zebra who is led by the penguins on an adventure outside of the zoo.

Dreaming of life in the wild is something the animals seek.

The endearing personalities and comedic humor of Edwards and Page is evident in their performances. There are fun and entertaining moments with a message that their friendship is the priority.

Amelia Youse plays “Gloria the Hippo” displaying her bold side, yet providing her maternal side as caretaker of her friends.

Morgan Shields as “Melman the Giraffe” provides a kindhearted, albeit nervous, approach and can rise to the situation if needed to protect her friends.

These four students established themselves as a cohesive unit throughout the musical, with each personality unique yet blending with the others to offer the audience an entertaining program. Their onstage chemistry is evident.

Birds on a mission to bust out of the zoo, penguins August Wendel, Violet Nalichowski, Brightly Simon and Sam Zaleski work together to try to make it home to Antarctica.

The hilarious and youthful penguins make their escape from the Central Park Zoo but end up in King Julien’s Madagascar, Africa, instead.

King Julien, played by November Kubushefski, offers substance as leader of the lemurs played by Luke Miller, Mayzie Ulicny, Emma Baaden, Caroline Henry, Hannah Wertz, Brianna Butcher and Mila Meadows. Lemurs are native to Madagascar and do not want to be eaten by the catlike creatures known as the Foosa. Alina Al Mir, the Foosa Leader, works with Angelina Baiardi, Evangeline Vigo, Dalton Heimbach, Jaymalyne Calcano, Lilyana Ulicny and Madelyn Stauffer to bring the struggles of survival in Madagascar.

Other members of the cast include: Emma Baaden, Sophia Grayeske, Hannah Wertz who play multiple roles throughout the production.

Stage crew members include: Blake Zdan, Andrew Guidon, Hayden Bogert and Giuliana Rossetti. These members of the drama club bring the animals to life on stage with upbeat scores, outlandish characters and adventure. The vibrant scenery and costumes makes this production exciting and fun. It makes the viewer feel a part of the adventure. By the end of the show, this cast will have the audience dancing on its feet to “Move it, Move it!”

Performances are 6 p.m. March 13 and 2 and 6 p.m. March 14. Doors open 30 minutes before show time in the Monsignor Hoban Gymnasium at the school, 435 S. Sixth St., Emmaus.
