Champ, again!

Dillard wins fourth state gold medal

Keanu Dillard doesn’t really get nervous.

When you’ve wrestled at a high level throughout your career, big matches become the norm.

Dillard didn’t feel any unusual nerves before stepping onto the mat Saturday afternoon for his final high school wrestling match in the PIAA championships.

It was just another day at the office for the Bethlehem Catholic star, one that made him a state champ for a fourth time.

Dillard made it possible with a 1-0 victory over Whitehall’s Willmont Kai in the 133-pound 3A finale.

It was the third straight victory over Kai in as many weeks, as the defending state champions battled at districts, regionals and now states in a weight class where District 11 took the top three spots.

“It’s tough, you got to make adjustments each time and find ways to get him off his game and score more points. He’s definitely tough and a great wrestler, but I wanted to be mentally tough and spread the gap again.”

Beating an opponent three weeks in a row is no easy feat and Dillard was able to parlay a second period escape to win the crown. He rode out Kai in the third period to preserve the win.

“I think I’m a lot better moving forward when I’m being offensive,” said Dillard of wrestling Kai. “I knew I could beat him. I know I’m a better wrestler.”

His victory also cemented him in rare state wrestling company, becoming the 15th four-time state champion in Pennsylvania history, joining Catasauqua’s Matt Gerhard (1981-84), as the only wrestlers in District 11 history to accomplish the feat. The Lehigh commit finishes his career with a 147-10 mark.

Dillard was one of four Beca wrestlers to come away with medals in Hershey, as Nico Emili (121), Andre Cerrato (127) and Reef Dillard (139) all came away with hardware.

Reef Dillard took fifth following a 1-0 decision over Blake Boyer of Kennett. It was his first appearance on the state podium after striking out the last two years in Hershey and it was a goal he was glad to check off his list.

“This is what I’ve been working for all year and in my career,” said Dillard. “This whole season has been a roller coaster, and you just got to keep moving forward. I feel like I’ve always been good enough to be a state medalist and it feels great to get that done.”

Nico Emili made it back-to-back years with a seventh place finish in Hershey, holding off Teagan Caciolo of Emmaus 2-1 in their consolation final.

Emili wanted a higher medal coming into states, but was proud of his efforts throughout the three days.

“I know I wrestled 100 percent in every match and gave it everything I had,” he said. “I’m not thrilled with the result, but I’m not disappointed either. I got on the podium and that’s hard to do, especially in this tough bracket.”

Cerrato lost 7-3 to Max Tancini of Perkiomen Valley in the consolation finals to take eighth.

All three of those wrestlers are underclassmen and will be vying for return trips to Hershey, while Keanu Dillard will be looking at bigger things when he heads to Lehigh next year.

“I definitely got a little emotional knowing this was going to be my last high school match,” said Dillard, “but there’s going to be more to come.”
