LIBERTY NEWS By Ella Sherman
Liberty HS is officially deep into the second semester. Despite frequent snow days and two-hour delays, students have remained hard at work diving into new classes and staying involved with extracurricular activities.
Athletics have seen notable success this winter. Congratulations are due to the Hurricanes Boys Basketball team which had an outstanding performance during playoffs this season. The team faced off against Parkland Feb. 28 for the PIAA XI 6A district championship. After a close game, the Canes unfortunately lost in overtime, 51-44.
Senior Jake Puckzyn was named All EPC first-team. This was his second season being named to the honor, highlighting an already impressive year for the program.
The team participated in the PIAA tournament, hosting Wilkes Barre March 7.
The girls basketball team also delivered success in the playoffs, advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to Emmaus. Senior Ava Kopetskie not only broke the 39-year LHS all-time scoring record but was also named the EPC Girls Basketball MVP. Kopetskie has committed to continue her career at Loyola University Maryland.
At Liberty, you don’t need to be on a varsity team to engage in basketball competition. The annual Roundball Rumble pep rally gives each grade level the opportunity to compete against each other in a fast-paced competition. This year, the sophomores beat the freshman and the juniors beat the seniors. There was also a staff-seniors game which resulted in an exciting win for the staff.
As for the music department, senior Cameron Dunham placed first at the PMEA Region V Chorus Festival. Dunham will compete at the state level April 23.
The Liberty Grenadier Band will hold its annual concerts March 27-28. Band members are currently fundraising for a trip to London in June. To donate, visit LHSGBOPC.org.
In addition to sports and artistic achievements, students have also made significant impacts through service. Senior Braylin Moser was awarded the Gold National Service Award for achieving over 1,500 community service hours. Moser’s achievement marks the highest total in school history.
Also on the service side of things, the National Honor Society orginized a Miller-Keystone Blood Drive Feb. 18. Despite 18 deferrals and 2 unsuccessful donations, the drive netted 31 units of life saving blood which will be distributed to healthcare facilities.
