Recent Lehigh County commissioner resolution carries no legal authority
To the Editor:
The [Lehigh County] Board of Commissioners at its Feb. 11 meeting voted 5-4 to claim fascism and authoritarianism exist in the executive branch of our federal government. These five Democrats, Jon Irons, who appears to have written the resolution, Zach Cole-Borghi, Geoff Brace, April Riddick and Sheila Alvarado voted yes to declare President Donald Trump, his administration and his supporters are fascists.
This is dangerous and puts Republicans in danger of harm. This resolution carries no legal authority. It changes nothing in federal policy. It does nothing to improve county services.
Being my first board meeting, I thought it would be interesting to see how a group of county officials, who had no authority, could prosecute the President of the U.S. for such an egregious crime as being a fascist. But of course, they knew they didn’t have any authority and they knew this was a blatant method to make a cowardly political attack to embarrass the very top Republican in our country.
Hitler was a fascist. Fascism is not simply a political insult. It describes a brutal system of governance defined by dictatorship, suppression of dissent, centralized control and elimination of free elections. Hitler attained power through deceit and terror. He started World War II where 80 million people died including 6 million Jews.
Trump was overwhelmingly elected president. He’s one of the most active presidents in history. he works very long hours for the good of the people.
Some accomplishments: cut government waste, secured border, lowered homicides, cut fentanyl, lowered gas prices, reduced inflation, no tax on tips, overtime, Social Security, reduced trade deficit, ended Hamas war.
Voters for this resolution should have spent their time working on projects to improve county services and taxes rather than wasting time calling President Donald Trump a fascist.
