Officer Sabdiel Diaz praised for rescue of resident

At the Macungie Borough Council meeting March 2, there was a public hearing for Ordinance 2026-01 which is the sewer lateral inspection validity time period. This is to establish a 2-year time period for sewer lateral inspections. The current ordinance has inspections completed upon transfer of the property or change in its usage. This was approved.

In the engineer’s report, the Hickory Street Bridge’s structural design is awaiting Pennsylvania Department of Transportation approval. The South Church Street roadway design is completed and UGI has agreed to share costs of road construction. Clearances by PennDOT are currently an issue with a meeting scheduled for March 4. It is anticipated bids are to be sought in April or May.

Main Street Commons, Phase 4, is nearing completion. An occupancy permit was issued.

Tim Romig, a business owner in Macungie questioned why Mavis Discount Tire was functioning without this being done before it opened. He also questioned why the sidewalk was not completed properly. It was also mentioned that clearing of the sidewalk was not always completed.

Romig also questioned recording of meetings. He could not get audio recordings for Oct. 6, 27 and Nov. 17, 2025. Council will look into this. Romig also mentioned the zoning hearing board and planning commission minutes were not available.

Tara Troxell was hired as the administrative assistant, effective March 2.

Borough Manager Kal Sostarecz said the agenda and details are posted on the website Friday before the Monday meeting when questioned by a resident.

Residents spoke of various concerns within the borough. A number of council procedures were mentioned such as electing/appointing new council members.

Several residents mentioned the bravery of the police with regard to the rescue of a resident in a burning house. Officer Sabdiel Diaz was praised for his rescue of this resident.

Sostarecz proposed the purchase of four microphones for use during council meetings. The request was approved.

Troop 71 leaders spoke about a project they are proposing for the Macungie Institute. Matt Weider, Troop leader, Matt Hunter, assistant and Chip Wachob proposed improvements to the basement. They are focusing on signage, flooring and replacing some ceiling tiles. Funding will be provided by the Troop.

Council was in favor of this project. Council member Stan Landis, praised the Troop for this proposal.

A request was made by the Town Beautification Committee to plant a tree in memory of Barb Ritter to replace a tree planted previously. It did not do well due to possible lack of care. This was approved.

William Reiss submitted a request to be appointed to the zoning hearing board. Romig submitted a District Justice Hearing chart showing various violations involving Reiss, saying he was an habitual violator.

A motion was made to make Reiss a member of the zoning hearing board but the motion was not approved. Lynette Sell, Sam Landis, Greg Reinbold and Megan Sell all voted no with Greg Hutchison, Ron Karboski and Carl Sell all voting yes.
