Schiffert takes silver
Dan Schiffert wasn’t happy with how we wrestled at the Northeast Regional 3A wrestling tournament last week. Fortunately, Schiffert will get another crack to be on the podium this week at the PIAA championships in Hershey.
Schiffert ended up taking second at heavyweight over the weekend at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium following a 10-1 major decision loss to Brody Rebuck of Shikellamy.
Rebuck, who is 39-0 on the season, scored a second period takedown to push in front and then cemented the win with a takedown and three nearfall points in third period to win comfortably.
“I knew the guy that goes out first and scores is probably going to win,” said Schiffert. “I wrestled terrible in the quarters and wasn’t happy with my performance, but I just got to keep the mindset that I’ll go out and do better.”
Schiffert majored Brayden Benjamin of Columbia Montour Vo-Tech in the quarters, but then slid by Jack Peters of Selinsgrove 2-1 in the semis, scoring a reversal with 28 seconds left in the match for the comeback win.
Now the focus is on a return trip to the Giant Center on Thursday when wrestling gets underway at 4:30pm.
Schiffert (28-2) hopes his path is different from a year ago when he won districts and took second at regionals, just like this year, only to leave Hershey without a medal.
“I’m expecting to do better than last year,” he said. “I just picture it in my mind of being on that podium.”
Nicholas Lyden (152) competed at regionals, but was bounced in the consolation bracket.
He suffered a 19-2 tech fall loss to Lucas Drake of Abington Heights in the quarters and then had to forfeit out of the consys to give him a bittersweet ending to his junior year.
