Theater Review: Pennsylvania Youth Theatre catches “Starcatcher”

If you are not familiar with “Peter and the Starcatcher,” it is a Peter Pan origin story.

The play by Rick Elice and based on the 2004 novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, is told through a group of children at play.

Pennsylvania Youth Theatre’s (PYT) production of “Peter and the Starcatcher” was presented Valentine’s Day weekend, Feb. 12-14, Charles A. Brown Ice House, Bethlehem.

The PYT production set was a detailed, stationary playground apparatus. Two small wooden boats represented the main two ships. A wooden trunk on wheels represented a third ship. The setting of the ships provided a playground.

One of the best parts of the production was the prelude. As the audience filled the venue, the actors, in character, played children’s games on the playground.

The cast did double and triple duty as well. Simple bananas, a mustache and some inspired mermaid costumes transformed the actors into new characters.

My 12-year-old companion at the performance had some trouble following the character changes. Thankfully, the cast did not.

Mostly, the show is a comedy, but a fine dramatic moment came when Molly (Julia Rippke) had to choose between saving her father or the boy Peter.

Sloan Bubser played Mrs. Bumbrake in a fine bold fashion. Anya Ferris was a marvelous Smee. August Harrington shone as the Pirate Black Stashe, who eventually becomes Captain Hook.

Rachel Lutz was the Director.

Nicholas Conti was Music Director.

The music was by Wayne Parker.

Set Designer was Maggie Schultzler.

Anthony Forchelii and City Entertainment were Lighting and Sound Designer.
