Pates Schiffert brings home gold
Freedom’s Daniel Schiffert joined elite company after winning his second straight District 11 3A championship Saturday evening at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium.
Schiffert became one of seven wrestlers in school history to become a two-time district champion, as the Patriots senior heavyweight won with ease throughout the weekend.
Schiffert capped off the tournament with an 11-1 major decision over Easton’s Kurtis Crossman in the finals.
After winning last year, repeating as heavyweight champion didn’t have the same luster, as Schiffert has bigger goals on his mind.
“It’s not as good as the first time,” Schiffert said with a smile. “Going into the week I was expecting that match, and I was ready for it. Feels good to get that win, but I want to win it all and that starts with regionals.”
Schiffert lost in last year’s Northeast Regional 3A finals and now has that gold medal on the agenda when wrestling resumes at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium Friday afternoon.
He won his four bouts at districts rather easily, posting two majors, a technical fall and a fall in his opener, but wants to see his offense develop more this week as he gears up for week two of the postseason.
“I want to have my offense take over more,” said Schiffert of this week’s goals. “I was pretty good on my feet [at districts], so I think next week I’ll be even better.”
Schiffert is one of two Pates that will be wrestling at regionals, as Nicholas Lyden punched his ticket with a fourth-place finish at 152-pounds.
Lyden lost by fall to Notre Dame’s Jared Gonzalez in :55 seconds during the consolation final. Lyden reached the semifinals, but lost to Nazareth’s Cade Campbell by a 17-1 technical fall.
