Lehigh Township fills vacant planning commission seat

Lehigh Township Board of Supervisors filled an empty seat on the planning commission during its meeting Jan. 27. Township Manager Alice Rehrig said there was one letter of interest from resident Wayne Kleintop.

“I am a lifelong resident of the township,” Kleintop said. “I know the job can be complicated, and there is a lot involved. I would be an asset because I love the township. I feel the residents are my boss. I am pro-business. I will work with everyone to find answers to solve problems.”

A motion made by Supervisor Janet Sheats and seconded by Supervisor Jerry Pritchard was unanimously approved to appoint Kleintop to the planning commission.

The supervisors also approved several resolutions.

Resolution 2026-7 was for establishing records to be destroyed. Supervisor Cindy Miller asked if this covers the past tax collector records.

“This is for both tax records and other documents that the township has,” Rehrig replied. “I am checking to see how long some must be kept.”

Resolution 2026-8 adopted the emergency management plan.

“I would like the board to go ahead with the planning commission to spend money for our solicitor and engineer to get the new ordinances for the data centers that, by state law, we have to let into our township,” Miller said. “The state looks at them as utilities. Ordinances would say where they can and cannot go.”

The board agreed.

Sheats received a request from police Chief John Henry to get testing material for the sergeants exam in May.

“Sgt. Philip Mirabile will move up to detective, so that will leave an open spot for sergeant,” she added.

Brianna Clough, a Northampton Area High School junior, requested permission to construct a rainbow bridge pet memorial in Delps Park.

“The project will not cost the taxpayers any money,” she said. “I will plan and execute a fundraiser to raise the money needed for materials. The bridge will be approximately 6 feet long and 2 feet wide, depending on the area around it. The bridge will be made with pretreated wood. It should last approximately 10 years. It is small enough that it can be removed or replaced.”

Pritchard said he thinks it’s a good idea.

“It will just come down to our maintenance people taking care of it,” Miller said.

Chairman Mike Jones shared concern the paint will chip, but Brianna noted they will use colored composite wood that does not chip.

Sheats made a motion for Brianna to work with the recreation board and public works Director Frank Zamadics to go ahead with the plan. The motion carried, with Miller voting no.
