Hurricane boys head to D-11 semifinals

Liberty is one win away from advancing to the PIAA tournament and they get to choose their path Wednesday night at Easton in the District 11 6A semifinals.

The sixth-seeded Hurricanes will take on seventh-seeded Whitehall at 6 p.m. for a shot to play in Saturday’s district championship.

Parkland and Pocono Mountain East close out the night at 7:30 p.m. in a four-eight showdown.

The losers of both games will then play on Saturday in the consolation final with a ticket to states on the line, as the top three teams from District 11 advance to the PIAA tournament.

After handling third-seeded Nazareth 75-65 last Saturday, Liberty has put themselves in a great position to either play for a district title and keep their season going in states.

“I am really proud of how we started the game fast, which was a point of emphasis for us,” said Liberty head coach Nigel Long on the win over Nazareth. “We were able to receive contributions from everyone throughout the game which was also great to see.”

Liberty used a 12-0 run in the first quarter to run out to a 14-5 lead and never looked back in their third meeting of the season with the Blue Eagles.

Luke Heffernan had a career-high 17 points in the win, while Jake Pukszyn had a team high 21 points to pace the Hurricanes (16-9).

Now a showdown with an upset minded Whitehall (12-12) team is on the horizon, after the Zephyrs knocked off second-seeded Pocono Mountain West 50-47.

The last time Liberty played Whitehall was on Dec. 3 with Liberty coming away with a 46-44 victory.

“It has been nearly three months since we last played Whitehall,” said Long. “From the time we first played them we felt like they would be one of the better teams in our league. They are well coached, disciplined, and have multisport athletes who are tough kids and are used to winning. They have really been playing well over the last few weeks.”

Bethlehem Catholic’s season came to an end last week with a 43-36 loss to North Schuylkill.

The Spartans closed out the game with a 9-0 run to come out with the win and end Beca’s season at 12-11.

Parker McClary led the Hawks with 12 points.

Liberty now hopes they can keep their season going and would prefer that route leads for a chance at a district title.

“Continuing to stack great practices is important,” said Long on what it’ll take to make a run at a district title. “Taking everything one day at a time and one game at a time. In game, focusing on minimizing self inflicted mistakes, valuing possessions offensively, and defensively getting stops.”
