Dillard brothers win D-11 titles, Emili also golden
There’s not many brother tandems to win district gold medals, but doing it together on the same night is even more rare.
The District 11 3A wrestling championships started with a Reef Dillard gold medal and ended with a Keanu Dillard gold medal.
It was the first district championship for Reef, but the fourth straight for Keanu on a memorable night for the Bethlehem Catholic brothers.
The Hawks came away with three gold medalists in total, as Nico Emili also took home his first gold following an 8-1 decision over Emmaus’ Teagan Caciolo.
Reef made easy business of Easton’s Noah Fenner with a 20-3 technical fall in 5:32 in the 139-pound championship.
He then had to wait to see his brother win in the final marquee bout of the night between defending state champions, as Keanu held off Whitehall’s Willmont Kai 1-0 in the 133-pound championship.
“It feels great to get on top of that podium and show everyone good I really am,” said Reef. “There’s been a lot of ups and downs this season, but you just got to keep working hard. It’s cool to win with my brother on the same night. Not many people can say that.”
Keanu was voted as the tournament’s outstanding wrestler and in a chess match of state champions, his third period escape over Kai was enough for his career sweep of district championships.
While Dillard is always one to stay focused, the noise of being a four-time district, regional and state champ is something he certainly hears.
“I hear the four-time champ stuff, but I’m confident in myself and the team to keep getting better,” Dillard said. “But my favorite part of the tournament was seeing my brother win. I knew he’d do good in the finals, and him winning was probably more important than any of my district finals. I was really happy to see him win.”
After two straight years of being a district runner-up, Reef’s path to the championship got a shot of adrenaline when he knocked off Northampton’s defending state champion Trey Wagner 4-1 in the semifinals.
Dillard scored the winning takedown at the buzzer for the monstrous victory.
“I knew the Jonesy was there,” said Dillard. “I just had to get my leg inside, and it was there for the taking. I ended up getting it.”
The Hawks finished fifth in the team standings and pushed through six wrestlers in total to this weekend’s Northeast Regional 3A tournament back at Liberty.
Andre Cerrato took third with a 1-0 decision over Parkland’s Matthew Velez in the consolation finals, while Michael Nicosia (107) settled for fourth with a 6-5 defeat to Stroudsburg’s Jack Jasionowicz.
Connor Gillahan was the final Hawk to advance when he pinned Allen’s Curtis Cooper in 2:25 during the 189-pound fifth place match.
Mason Thomas (160) took sixth and fell a spot short of advancing following a 4-3 loss to Southern Lehigh’s Keith Barker in the fifth-place match.
