Tigers top JT, Freedom to cap regular season

The Northwestern girls basketball team completed another regular season recently.

The Tigers now have the Colonial League and District 11 tournaments ahead as they fight to win gold and earn a trip back to the PIAA tournament.

The Colonial League schedule came to an end Monday night for Northwestern when it disposed of Jim Thorpe, 52-24. Sophomore Natalie Conner had a game-high 20 points in the win and had three of the team’s seven three-pointers.

The regular season ended Tuesday without much of a test from Freedom as the Tigers took them down 50-23. Conner scored 26 points to lead all scorers.

The three-point shooting didn’t cool down from the night before as Northwestern dropped in nine shots from beyond the arc. Conner hit six of the long range shots and in the two games. Emma Freeman had three and scored 11 points in the two games.

Freeman was coming off a game against Palmerton where she scored a season-high 12 points as the Tigers beat the Blue Bombers 41-38. Conner and Hannah Gober both scored 14 points in the win. Freeman and Gober, who are seniors, have both scored 25 points over their last three games, while freshman Charlotte Gober dropped in 19 points over her last three games.

The Colonial League playoffs begin Friday night with the quarterfinal round. Northwestern Lehigh will host Saucon Valley. The Tigers downed Saucon 57-39 in mid-December in their only meeting with the Panthers.

For the District 11 4A playoffs, Northwestern is ranked second behind Lehighton even though it defeated the Indians twice during the regular season to hand them their only two losses.

The final seeding can’t be determined until after the league playoffs since league champions are given preferential seeding for the tournament. While Lehighton and Northwestern are the top two teams, Palmerton, Wilson, and Saucon Valley are all in the 4A classification and would leap ahead if any of them were to win the Colonial League championship.

League champs earn preferential seeding in districts. Teams from three different leagues are part of the 4A bracket this year.
