Tigers hand Tribe first loss of season
Northwestern beat Lehighton last week to hand the Indians their first loss of the season. They were the last unbeaten team in District 11 girls basketball.
Tiger senior Mallory Conner and her sister, sophomore Natalie Conner combined to score 31 points in the 51-49 overtime win for Northwestern.
Natalie Conner scored 19 points. Mallory Conner scored 12 points in the win for Northwestern.
The game featured five lead changes throughout the night.
With the game tied 49-49 and less than 10 seconds left in the first overtime, Hannah Gober drove toward the basket to draw coverage and found Natalie Conner, who put up the game-winner with just :03 left on the clock.
The two teams meet again Friday night at Northwestern Lehigh High School.
Northwestern picked up wins against Palisades and Jim Thorpe last week.
At Palisades, Natalie Conner scored 25 points in a 53-13 pounding of the Pirates.
Jim Thorpe came to New Tripoli and lost 63-19 with Natalie Conner scoring 17 and senior Olivia Reinhart adding 11. In a four-game span, Natalie Conner scored 96 points for the Tigers.
Northwestern has a string of three straight home games this week. The regular season wraps up next week with a game at Jim Thorpe and the season finale at home next Friday night against Palmerton.
As of Tuesday, Northwestern (14-3 overall, 12-2 Colonial) was seeded third in the Colonial League standings. The Tigers trail Lehighton (15-1, 13-1) by a game and Notre Dame – Green Pond (13-4, 12-1) by a half-game in the standings. Notre Dame holds the tiebreaker over Northwestern by virtue of beating them earlier in the season.
Lehighton is the top 4A team in the power rankings with Northwestern in the number two spot. Palmerton and North Schuylkill are hanging close in the rankings.
