PHS falls to Easton in semi

Losses come in different shapes and sizes.

For the Parkland girls basketball team, Tuesday’s 55-50 setback to Easton in the East Penn Conference semifinals might seem like a tough one to take.

While the Trojans are disappointed to miss the title game, they left the PPL Center knowing they played well and still have at least one championship left in front of them.

“I was really happy with the way we played,” said Parkland head coach Ed Ohlson. “Our intensity was really good. We had a couple defensive breakdowns and that hurt us a little bit, but for the most part I thought we played a pretty solid game.

“[Easton] played very well. They had a couple people shoot today that don’t shoot like that.”

The Red Rovers held a 41-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter when freshman Eva Jordan, who had scored just two points over the first three quarters, scored Easton’s first eight points of the fourth quarter, including nailing two three-pointers.

“We know she’s a good shooter from the last time we played them,” said Ohlson. “But we didn’t think she’d have this kind of impact on this game.”

Parkland answered as Cheryllana Cunningham sank three three-pointers in the fourth quarter to keep her team within a basket of the lead at 49-48 with 2:15 left.

A couple turnovers down the stretch hurt Parkland’s chances, and the Rovers went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in the final minute to seal the win.

Jordan led her team in scoring with 15 points, while teammate Melina Cole added 12 points. Three other Rovers had seven or more points in a balanced scoring effort.

Parkland was led by Cunningham with 13 points. Eneri McGalla scored nine points, while Carly Spang and Isabella Hallal had seven points each. Arielle Brown scored six points and Addison Fritzinger had five for Parkland.

Easton, the top seed in the league tournament, will meet No. 2 seed Bethlehem Catholic in Thursday’s title game at 6 p.m. at the PPL Center. The Golden Hawks beat Emmaus in Tuesday’s other semifinal contest.

Parkland, which was the No. 4 seed, survived a tight first-round battle with No. 5 Nazareth just to reach the semifinals.

The Blue Eagles led Parkland by 22 points late in the first half before the Trojans mounted a comeback to win 43-42, with their only lead coming on the their final basket of the game.

“We tried to chunk it up,” said Ohlson. “We called a time out in the second quarter and said lets just try to get it to 15 by half. Lets get it to seven by the end of the third quarter. We got it to eight. Then we have a shot in the fourth quarter.

“We played really good defense and I thought our defense was just as good [in semifinal].”

Parkland trailed Nazareth 23-3 after one quarter and cut it to 33-18 at halftime.

The Trojans’ second-half defense stifled the Blue Eagles as they scored just four points in the third quarter and five in the second. Parkland cut the lead to 37-29 after three quarters.

McGalla led Parkland with 15 points in the quarterfinal win. Cunningham had 12 points while Hallal and Spang scored seven points each.

The Trojans move on to the District 11 tournament as the No. 2 seed behind Easton. They will likely open against Pocono Mountain West in the quarterfinal round next Friday.

The defending district champions could be on the same path they followed to last year’s title, when they lost to Emmaus in league semifinals before winning the district tournament.

“I feel good about where we’re at,” said Ohlson. “Going into districts, which is our big time of the year, I think we’re in pretty good shape. We have to clean up a couple things, but I think we’re in pretty good shape.

“We have a bunch of girls who have done it before. I thought tonight we were very resilient [in the semifinal]. We just came up a little short at the end.”
