Parkland wins league title
The Parkland girls wrestling team put on a dominant performance at the East Penn Conference Championships.
The Trojans crowned four league champs and had 10 medalists out of 13 weight classes at the event, which was held Saturday at Easton Middle School. Parkland won the tournament team title by a wide margin, finishing with 225 points. Nazareth was second at 136.
Senior Angelina Spachman was Parkland’s only repeat champ. She took first place at 136 pounds with pins in her first two matches and a 10-1 major decision over Myla Good (Nazareth) in the title bout.
“It’s a different feeling because last year was my first EPC and this was my last one,” said Spachman. “It feels good that I got it again.”
After taking third place at districts and regionals in 2025, Spachman finished second at states. This year she hopes to return to the state final, but also to win a couple more titles along the way.
“Win districts, place regionals and make it to [state] finals again,” she said of her goals for the remainder of her high school career.
Parkland sophomore Peyton Schneck wrestled four bouts in the 106-pound bracket. She won all four by fall in the first period of each match, putting Northampton’s Emilee Gaughran on her back in 1:49 in the title bout.
“It feels great because last year I didn’t place at all,” said Schneck of last year’s league tournament. “This is a big improvement for me. I just feel like I had a lot more practice and I worked a lot harder this season to get where I am.”
Trojan freshman Laura Volpe (142) also wrestled four bouts and earned first-period pins in each match, including pinning Emmaus sophomore Hailey Laible in 54 seconds in the championship match.
“I just shot a double and went right to a turn and she ended up on her back,” said Volpe.
It was the second time the two met in the last week as the Trojans beat the Hornets in a dual meet last Thursday. Volpe won that meeting as well.
Trojan junior Lizkarla Grullon-Vasquez won four matches Saturday to take the title at 190. She won two by decision and two by fall, including pinning Liberty’s Ellie Rumbalski in the title match in 5:02.
“Today was a good learning experience wrestling all these good girls,” said Grullon-Vasquez. “I made sure not to rush anything, made sure I was looking for everything I needed to.”
After taking second place by one point at last year’s league tournament, Grullon-Vasquez was eager to get back there this season and earn a title. Now she and her teammates will focus on preparing for the District 11 Championships on Feb. 14-15.
“It makes me really confident,” she said of winning the league title. “Especially since I’m going to see these girls again. I’m going to keep working on stuff I need to get better.”
Two other Trojans reached league title bouts Saturday. Saige Rittenhouse (124) dropped an 11-9 decision to Pocono Mountain East’s Elaina Mercadante in the title bout. Natalie Deutsch (155) lost to Emmaus’ returning league and district champ Olivya Kroope in the championship match.
Parkland’s Payton Ocasio (112), Lily Snook (118) and Scarlett Bareither (235) all won third-place bouts Saturday, while Emily Siglin (170) finished fourth at leagues.
The Trojans also won a pair of dual meets last week, beating Emmaus 56-18 last Thursday, just one day after a 69-6 win over Pleasant Valley.
Against Emmaus, Schneck, Ocasio, Snook, Rittenhouse, Spachman, Volpe, Grullon-Vasquez and Bareither won matches by fall. Siglin won her bout by technical fall, while Leila Palmeiri won a decision.
The Trojans won 12 of 13 bouts against Pleasant Valley, with Taya Daniels, Snook, Palmieri, Spachman, Volpe, Deutsch and Grullon-Vasquez pinning their Bear opponents. Bareither earned a win by decision, while Schneck, Ocasio, Rittenhouse and Siglin picked up wins by forfeit.
Parkland entered this week with one dual meet remaining on the schedule, Wednesday against East Stroudsburg South, before a couple weeks off heading into the district championships.
