LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Northwestern battles for playoff position

Snow and ice wiped out a rematch between Northwestern Lehigh and Lehighton last Saturday.

That game will be made up this Saturday as the regular season finale for the Tigers.

Before the storm, Northwestern hosted Northern Lehigh in a game that resembled a track meet.

The two teams came out ready to run and Northern Lehigh erased a deficit and take a lead, but eventually, Northwestern took over and won 60-45.

The Tigers opened the game on a 16-2 run behind Mason Bollinger’s six points.

“We like to play that type of game and push the ball up the court,” said Bollinger. “Especially when we’re getting rebounds. If they made a shot we just looked to push the tempo us and get really fast breaks and get some easy buckets down low.”

Northern Lehigh battled back to grab a 23-22 lead, its first since going up 2-0.

Kellen Bauer scored a game-high 29 points for the Bulldogs, while Michael Bauer scored seven of his 13 points in the second quarter. The duo accounted for all of Northern Lehigh’s scoring in the first half and all but three of its points in the game.

A Brady Krimmel layup gave Northwestern a 24-23 lead at halftime.

“Defensively tonight I thought we were really, really good, at least outside of that second quarter,” said Northwestern head coach Patrick Wanamaker. “We got a little too aggressive out front and were giving up too many direct line, straight line drives and they have kids that can score, so that was hurting us.”

Tiger senior Cannon Fitch closed out the third quarter with a three-pointer to put Northwestern up 44-33 with just eight minutes left in regulation.

“I liked the way we moved the ball tonight,” Bollinger said. “We have a lot of players that aren’t really selfish on the court, and we like to look for each other and make great plays. That’s what it’s all about. It’s about playing good team basketball.”

Three-pointers from Krimmel and Michael Lagowy gave Northwestern its largest lead of the night at 54-36 midway through the final quarter.

“We work at our defense every day,” said Fitch. “The coaches teach things that help our defense in the middle and always play hard. We just try to play that man defense to its full potential. We can still work on some things. I think teams always have stuff to work on. We are playing well right now and are at a pretty good spot.”

Bollinger finished as Northwestern’s leading scorer with 18 points, Coleman and Fitch both had 12 and Krimmel finished with 11 in the game.

Northwestern has clinched spots in both the league and district playoffs but is still fighting to get the top spot in both. The Tigers trail Notre Dame – Green Pond by 1 ½ games for the top spot in the Colonial League and are behind Salisbury in the district rankings.

With three games left and Notre Dame having four left to play, Northwestern needs help from other teams in the form of wins over the Crusaders. The Tigers lose the tiebreaker against Notre Dame so they would have to win the regular season standings outright.
