Krauss’ pin seals win over EEA
The Salisbury wrestling team competed in two matches last week, coming away with one win and one loss.
The Falcons (5-8 overall; 2-4 in Colonial League) kicked off the week with a 40-36 victory over nonleague foe Executive Education Academy last Monday. Two days later they dropped a 64-4 contest against Notre Dame-Green Pond.
Against Executive Education Academy, the Falcons overcame five forfeits to defeat the Raptors on their home mat. Salisbury won seven of the eight contested bouts, including five via fall.
After Executive Education Academy took an 18-0 lead after three forfeits, Jacob Spinner stopped the bleeding at 127 pounds. His technical fall win over Jayvian Hernandez, 16-1 in 2:40, got Salisbury within 18-5.
Jarrod Blunt followed that with Salisbury’s first pin of the match, taking down Nathaniel Cruz in 11 seconds.
The Raptors scored two more forfeits to take a 30-11 lead through seven bouts before Salisbury won five of the final six bouts to secure the victory.
Jordan Tocci-Wachter picked up Salisbury’s second fall of the night, taking down Tavarez Velazquez in 34 seconds at 152 pounds. Michael Segata earned a technical fall at 160 pounds, topping DeMarcus Shaw 18-1 in 2:50.
Colton Tone and Jacob Watson added back-to-back pins at 172 and 189 pounds, respectively, to give Salisbury its first lead at 34-30 with two bouts remaining.
It took only 47 seconds for Tone to pin Aldo Gomez. In the next match, Watson took down Javon Alvin with a pin in the second period.
Executive Education Academy picked up a win at 215 pounds to take a 36-34 lead, setting up a win-or-go-home situation for the Falcons at heavyweight.
There was little drama in the finale, as Sam Krauss pinned Sebastian Vera in 24 seconds to secure Salisbury’s fifth win of the season.
Notre Dame-Green Pond benefited from six Falcon forfeits, resulting in 36 of the Crusaders’ 64 points. The Crusaders also dominated by winning six of the seven contested bouts.
Blunt, who improved to 19-6 on the season, was Salisbury’s lone winner last Wednesday. He picked up a 9-1 major decision over Notre Dame-Green Pond’s Mason Roncolato.
It was his first major decision victory of the season, as Blunt is more accustomed to pinning his opponents. Fifteen of his wins this season are way of fall.
Salisbury will compete in this weekend’s Coal Cracker Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Lehighton High School.
